It is tough to figure out what is real and what is fake for images and video and probably everything!

This should alarm people as there can be great abuse and harm by evildoers.

So what is the practical solution to deter this abuse?

Always stay cheerful, be polite, kind, and understanding. Accepting yourself as the woman you are is very liberating.  Never underestimate the appreciation and respect of authenticity.  Help connect a person to someone that may be able to help that person.  Be brave, be strong.  A TRUE friend is a treasure.  Relationships are very important, people are important, and the sooner we all realize that the better off the world will be.  Try a little kindness.  Be generous with your time, energy, wisdom, and resources.   Inconvenience yourself to help someone.   I am a brown eyed, brown haired woman.

Using it as a tool to help decide on hairstyles isn't too bad and it has huge benefits for rapid data analysis for medical breakthoughs and the like. But when it starts distoting the truth in news and people can't tell reality from fakery it becomes a big problem.

It may not be possible to stop it, the genie is out of the bottle now worryingly. Things like facebook are rife with AI lies for example.

One thing that is extremely worying is it's increasing use in the military. In the Iran war for example. AI is picking the targets! It has got some decisions very wrong like the girls school in Tehran.

I don't think anything can be done. While ever human beings exist,  there will be malicious and dishonest activities. Human emotion is the problem and any technology will ultimately be evaluated for good and bad activities.

The solution...drown out the lies and bad intent with truth and compassion. Use the technology for good. Find ways to enhance yours and others lives with AI. it's a force multiplier. It can amplify good or bad intent.

The only thing we need to watch out for - programming bias into what should be impartial models.

Some AI image generators embed code to identify them as AI-generated. Some AI-generated text documents do the same, but they are easier to edit than images, making it easier to remove the identifiers.

As stated, it is a tool, so it can be used for good or bad. I just fear that humanity will rely on it far too much. We saw this ages ago when they stopped teaching basic arithmetic skills and handed each student a calculator. We had a generation of graduates who could not balance a checkbook or make change at the cash register.

Now that the internet is on our phones, we don't need to learn anything; we just pull up a YouTube video and get the task done. My neighbor spends most of his days getting his "news" from YouTube, Facebook, and other social media sites. No verification. No thinking for himself. If it's on the internet, it must be true!

That is where bad AI comes into play. I am all in favor of it helping with research and exploration, but the keyword there is HELPING. Not doing it autonomously. People need to exercise their brains so they don't atrophy. But thinking is hard work. And as Wallace Wattles said back in 1910: "That is why so many people avoid it."

You are so right about the calculator thing. People used to learn the times tables by rote but my primary school said no, it was for the children and parents to learn it themselves, here's a calculator. As a result I am hopeless at mental arithmatic, put a calculator in my hand and I will happily carry out degree level engineering mathematics but remove that calculator and out come the fingers!

It is the same with using laptops in school and emails or texts to communicate. The younger generations cannot do handwriting and cannot write letters or communicate properly it is a major disadvantage for them in the workplace.

AI is going destroy peoples abilities to gather reliable information, make informed choices or write reports or do coursework etc.

One of my interests is photography and it is getting to the point were AI generated images are indistiguishable from real photographs which could end the careers of professional photographers. The movie business is suffering the same way.

I'm beginning to regret posting this thread now, I'm indirectly contributing to the whole problem I suppose.

Because I was suggesting people should give AI a go to try out different hairstyles. Whilst harmless enough, I was actively promoting the use of AI which is actually not always a force for good.

My wife uses AI for papers and email. If she is trying to get a point across. She will pit it in AI then reword it to sound like her. Basically a template she uses for the base idea

Honestly I'm using chatgpt and copilot daily now. I have easily saved several days of work writing mundane parts of code, fixing coding errors, interpreting datasheets and doing calculations much faster.

Also been using it to search GRS reviews all over the internet and give me comparisons and estimated statistics.

I can't deny it makes so many things fast and clear. I still need to be in the driving seat though...for now!

Well without trying to offend anyone and perhaps I'm being an old fart but that all sounds like cheating to me! You could also just end up with generic reports, essays, letters, emails etc. It feels kind of soulless to me. I mean, I would imagine AI could write a novel but there wouldn't be any humanity in there so I don't think it has value.

Maybe I'm just a dinosaur from a dying breed! But I think there is a danger that people will start to rely too much on AI. It is easier to pick up mistakes when you write it yourself than when quickly checking through what an AI bot has done surely?

I use Grammarly, an AI tool that checks for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors.

(It just corrected me when I called it an AI bot to an AI tool. I must've touched a nerve.)
🤣

There is nothing wrong with using it to help with research, explore ideas, correct your writing, or write code. As long as you review what they present, edit as needed, and check for errors. If we don't check for errors and blindly accept anything it tells us, we start losing brain cells. A brain is like a muscle; you need to exercise it to keep it functioning.

It helps. It's free. But you still need to accept its suggestions, and it is sometimes wrong.
