United Nations rejects U.S. effort to erase trans women: "It stops here"

John Russell (23 March 2026)

Delegates at the United Nations 70th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) overwhelmingly voted against considering a proposal by the U.S. to adopt an anti-trans definition of "gender."

On March 19, the final day of the nine-day conference, the U.S. introduced a resolution calling on U.N. member states to officially define "gender" as referring only to men and women. The resolution claimed that the landmark Beijing Declaration on women's rights, adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, already defined gender as "referring to men and women."

But a letter from the progressive Women's Rights Caucus circulated among delegates last week noted that the commission did not adopt a specific definition of "gender" in 1995, Devex reported. Cristal Downing of the International Crisis Group said that at the time, member states "agreed to disagree" on interpretations of the word.

Speaking to Devex, Jennifer Rauch, global advocacy officer at Fòs Feminista, accused the U.S. of being "willing to lie" to "push forward their own gender ideology onto people in the U.N. system."

During last Thursday's final CSW session at the U.N. Headquarters in New York City, the representative from Belgium said that the U.S. resolution was "factually incorrect as it misquotes and contradicts Annex IV of the Fourth World Conference on Women, and attempts to rewrite what was carefully agreed and reflected in Beijing over 30 years ago."

"It was a huge moment of the world telling the U.S. that it stops here," María Paula Perdomo of the LGBTQ+ advocacy organization Outright International told Devex. "We follow the rules, and if you want to bring this, do it appropriately, do it with due process, and bring it with truth."

Sadly the US government (previous ones too) could not give two hoots what the UN says. They undermind it every chance they get.

They think international law is for everyone else but not the US and Israel or Russia and China. That is why the world order is breaking down. The bigger nations are ignoring the UN. So what incentive would any other country have to follow the rules? Power of veto has been a major impediment too of course.

China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and US have veto power to unilaterally block substantive resolutions.  They don't really care what rest of the members want as they can always veto them.  They don't always get what they want but their ability to veto and block everyone else is broken.

I 100 % agree, there should be no veto's. Even if you agree with the veto and why the countries that received the veto it still ignores the sacrifice of a lot of countries. It was meant to reward the countries that defeated the Axis powers and as a Canadian I find that immensely insulting without even trying I can think of 6 more countries that were involved and that doesn't even include the Nordic countries

Bah I hate the veto and think that it is absolutely garbage and should be revoked. Also with the exception of France all of the veto powers agree with taking away rights of trans people.

Their power of veto is only in the Security Council.  This doesn't sound to me like a Security Council issue.  It is almost certainly a General Assembly issue, where there are no vetoes.

Yes you are right, the trans issue has nothing to do with the security council. My whinge was more general really. The resolutions are still ignored when it suits them though regardless of veto powers. Actually I would add Israel to the list of countries that blatantly ignore the UN.

The UK is a member of the veto club but I would be more than happy to give it up if the other countries would, but they wouldn't of course, well maybe France would join us.

To be honest I think the UN is doomed unless it changes pretty soon. However, It did well here in rejecting Trumps anti trans agenda.
