The International Olympic Committee has announced compulsory gene testing to limit women's events to biological females.

In a release on Thursday, the IOC said the new rule "protects fairness, safety and integrity in the female category" and does not apply to grassroots or recreational sports programmes. The testing, the IOC said, will see transgender women and some athletes with differences in sex development (DSD) barred from competing.

Athletes will have to undergo a one-time screening for the SRY gene, which is involved in male-typical sex development and is found on the Y chromosome.

The gene testing, described as "evidence‑based and expert‑informed" by the IOC, will come into effect for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games but will not be applied retroactively.

Thursday's announcement follows the World Athletics ruling last July, which introduced the same requirement in time for the Tokyo World Championships that took place in September.
