Are there cafeterias in the UK and Australia?

Or are they most dining halls at colleges or maybe a monastery, this is, a refectory, and not for the general public?

Chrissy

Always stay cheerful, be polite, kind, and understanding. Accepting yourself as the woman you are is very liberating.  Never underestimate the appreciation and respect of authenticity.  Help connect a person to someone that may be able to help that person.  Be brave, be strong.  A TRUE friend is a treasure.  Relationships are very important, people are important, and the sooner we all realize that the better off the world will be.  Try a little kindness.  Be generous with your time, energy, wisdom, and resources.   Inconvenience yourself to help someone.   I am a brown eyed, brown haired woman.

Pretty sure dining halls at monasteries in the UK would probably only serve beer. ;D

We have café's, though. Loads of them. Often with the well-heeled sat at a table decrying how horrible life is because they broke a nail, while sipping a £20 coffee.

That is expensive coffee.

Mead too! The monks had it good!

Yeah, cafe culture is everywhere Chrissy. I frequent many of them. I think Lauren is referring to the Americanised cafe type like Starbucks and the UK version Costa. I never go in those ones s their prices are eye-watering. I like the traditional cafes where it's all home cooked food and cakes, and they serve afternoon tea and big full english breakfasts. You can chat on to the staff and if you go regularly you'll know them by name. They are literally everywhere in the UK. We can never be too far from a good cuppa!

I envision lots of tea rooms in England for tea time.

There are, but be prepared to re-mortgage your home.

You're better off doing it yourself. :)

Oh hell yeah. Bacon and black pudding for me. Meet you there.

Remember truckers cafe's? They were allways the place to stop on a road trip. Huge mugs of tea, enourmous full english and cheap as chips. Sadly they've disapeared now, replaced by corporate service stations or burger vans.

Yeah everyone knows us Yorkshire folk are as... well, to quote the expression, "As tight as a camel's backside in a sandstorm." :P

To be fair... I don't like tea. I am somewhat of a British heretic. And they look at you all weird, like you just slapped their grandma, if you ask for coffee.

Of course a cafeteria is different than a cafe, coffeehouse, or a diner.

Envision getting in line with a food tray and selecting what you want to eat from the various food stations you pass by.

We call that a carvery. Although it's more often a dinner plate than a plastic food tray.

I would keep that quiet Lauren. They'll revoke your passport and deport you!

@ChrissyRyan , a cafeteria by your definition is more like what you would see at work, school or in a university or a service station, also known as a refectory

Here, we call buffets "Slop Troughs".

That doesn't mean the food is bad. We have some very good ones. That is just how it looks when you have a hundred people filling their plates at the same time.

That's kind of a navy term. Mess Deck. In basic training we called the cafeteria "Trafalgar Galley", or "Traf Galley" for short. This was quickly corrupted to "Trash Alley." Go figure.

In the Army, they are Mess Halls. We would imitate a British accent and call them Mess 'Alls.

Still a few truckers cafes  about. I loved visiting when I was riding. Cheerios near Sleaford was a favourite, also Midway Truckstop and Lyns in Whitchurch. Just don't wear anything red and white in the last 2 as its Outlaws turf.
