We have 11 national holidays, federal and state governments get all of those as holidays. I get 5 holidays where the plant is actually shut down. The ones where the plant is shut down I get paid for. For Christmas and Thanksgiving its a 2 day holiday. During Christmas through New Year's the plant is down and we do maintenance we have been putting off.

Yeah it's the luck of the draw job wise unfortunately. I used to have to work bank hols when working for British Gas. They always wanted their pound of flesh!

So how many paid national holidays then? If you have 11 days then it sounds like American workers are ahead of us on work benefits for once!

There is no standard for paid holidays. If you are a federal or state worker you get all 11 as paid. My last employer had 0 paid holidays. My current employer pays 5 holidays.

In the IBEW (Electricians Union), we got holidays off, but not all were paid. We spent months negotiating a contract to get Veterans Day as a paid holiday. Employers refused, saying we can take off any day we want and call it Veterans Day, but they won't pay.

So we took off a couple of days every week to celebrate Veterans Day. They hated it and finally agreed to having Veterans Day as a paid holiday once a year.

🤣

Oh that's harsh. All our holidays are paid. I have 24 paid days holiday this year plus the 8 bank holidays though a lot of them fall on a monday and I don't work Mondays so I get extra days holiday to compensate. It's actually surpisingly difficult to use up the holiday when I'm part time. There is never any need to take occasional days off as I have so much free time. Of course that also means I have a low income but you can't have everything.

I'm also on flexi-time so I can build up my hours and take time off or choose when I want to start or if I want to finish early. I currently have 15 hours built up.

Does your holiday time accrue so that when you hit a certain amount, you can cash it in?

When I was in the Army, we got 30 days paid vacation per year, and you could accrue up to 60 days before you lose it. But you could cash it in (for a month's pay) or just take a vacation. A few times, I did both. Save up 60 days, cash in 30, then take 30 days off. I found that I don't like more than a two-week vacation, so I planned better around that.

It definitely differs amongst employers in the UK. I get 30 days but that is working full time. The company shuts between xmas and new year so those days are subtracted from our holiday entitlement without choice. I can't carry days over, so lose them if not taken. I can only gain days by working a day off like a weekend. Hours over during the week are unpaid.

Oh Absolutely right. As I'm part time my holidays are pro rata so I'm supposed to get 11 days but as there are several monday bank holidays that I wouldn't work I end up with 15 days. I have 5 days carried over from last year and I am owed 4 training days which are supposed to be used for doing assignments but I tend to do them in the evenings or weekends anyway. If I was full time I think it goes to 24 rising to 28 based on years service. It's bloody confusing!

I am having a difficult time attempting to navigate with my employer, my work hours, sick time, holiday pay, unscheduled time off, PAID vacation time and possible bonuses.

Oh WAIT! I am self-employed, I have none (ZERO) of those benefits unless I PAY for them, and for 3 months during Federal income tax season I many times work 7 day weeks and long 15+ hour days. If I don't work there is no paycheck and no future growth in my business.

Now, mind you, I have worked with past employers for many years HOWEVER I am very happy with my present situation, I would make a terrible employee for any company.

Definitely rather you than me! The stress would end me. My ideal working week would be zero hours! I'll keep dreaming!!
