I love the history. I went to Washington DC and Boston. The history there is great. My wife likes to do the ghost tours. Not that we're looking for ghosts but you get a lot of the dirty history
One of our local castles (Chillingham Castle) is actually the most haunted in Britain. You'll probably like that one. Not sure when I can get up there as it's quite far North (like about an hour and a bit)  but I've never actually been so I'm as interested as you about that one.

My mum grew up in the little village of Washington which is where George Washington's family are from. They were the big landowners at the time. Washington Old Hall (his ancestral home built 1183) is still there and you can go in. I could have a pop over there, though strictly speaking it's County Durham not Northumberland. Durham is a pretty epic place too mind. Washington became a "newtown" in the 1960's so it's ended up a huge place but the old village is still nestled in amongst it all.

I don't have anything close to that anywhere close to me, Sarah.

Thank you.

I am a massive history buff. And people who live in places where they have these things always amaze me. Thank you for sharing this. It will likely be in my dreams. I wish I could capture something like that.

You are more in the north than I am, where there was more of an attitude of "Build fortifications to protect from the heathen masses..." back when England and Scotland liked each other less than we do now.

You are the quintessential northern lass. And I find where you are utterly fascinating. Thank you for your eye on the world. <3

I'm glad I don't bore the arse of you Lauren!

Northumberland has around 70 castles in total. We needed them because of the pesky Scots and marauding border rievers. A lot of them are just piles of rubble now but some are magnificent fortresses.

We also have Hadrians Wall of course which was as far North as the Romans were able to sustainably push their empire. We are the real life wildlings from game of thornes up here you know. You are the Starks.

Maybe you could start another blog Stotties History. It could be a big hit

Haha, I am like the 0.1% of people who never watched Game of Thrones. Kind of like Harry Potter. From what I gather it was the best thing since sliced bread, until people forgot how to slice bread.

I would kind of like your part of the world, Sarah, if it has people like you in it. :)

One of the oldest houses around here is a manor house that started as an Elizabethan building, I worked on their cars and have been to the house and seen the brickwork . Most of the big houses here are Georgian.

Supremely awesome, Davina. Would love to see some parts of where you live sometime.

I am rather a fan of history. I like thinking about what stories places can tell. Outside of the graffiti on the walls telling you that "Kaz luvs Baz, or Shaz. Or even Daz. Maybe all of the above." I find the history locked up in a place to be rather romantic, and fascinating.

The view from the top of the Malvern hills is great across the Severn valley from just about visible Droitwich to the north down to almost Gloucester in the south and the Cotswold hills to the East. Looking West you can see (just about) the black mountains in Wales. No wonder there is an Iron age fort up there.

Gloucester, like Worcester and Leicester... breaks a lot of people's brains when they try to pronounce it, haha.

It sounds idyllic. I know the Cotswolds are an incredibly pretty place. Makes where I live look like an industrial estate.
