I've been looking at houses, and sometimes I think the same thing: What were they thinking?

Take your time and make it yours.
That would explain the carpets!!!! Trippy doesn't even begin to describe it :)

Yeah, in 1-2 weeks time the fun part starts. No more building work (for now). Just furniture building, decorating and floor laying. I want to get the house in a good state before I start smashing up the bathroom for the next phase!

We did that. It is really hard.  I don't recommend it though it looks nice.

Another setback with my lovely new house😐

My heating engineer has discovered that sitting behind the old coal fire bricks deep inside the chimney breast is an old cast iron back boiler. Not only that, it is still connected to the current heating system! I know first hand those things are an absolute nightmare to try and remove and there's no way I'm going to do it so there goes my fireplace idea. Also, those back boilers will have produced so much black treacle like sludge in the pipes I'm going to have to re-pipe the whole system! Good job I bought a bungalow so I only have one floor to do ha ha!

Additionally, the hot pipework is absolutely nuts, It goes up into the loft 3 times! there will be virtually zero water pressure by the time it gets to the furthest outlets so the hot and cold need to be re-piped too. Total additinal cost is £700 which in the grand scheme of things is bloody brilliant but still. This house is fighting me at every turn!

I'm giving the property a new lease of life though. It's going to be great when I'm done.....

Yikes!  Sorry to hear about your ongoing house woes.  I guess I should be happy that all I have to deal with (that I know of - touch wood) is gutters, shingles, and paint.  You'll get it sorted and will enjoy the results, but I get that it is a PITA for now.

Thanks Kathy. To be honest I feel immune to the setbacks now! It will all get sorted in the end. It will have a completely new heating, plumbing and electrical system under the hood and I can build from that. If the electrician and heating engineer don't wreck the flooring I'm considering going for stripped wood flooring in the through lounge/dining room.

I'm definitely considering a scandi ercol type media unit or sideboard as a cool retro feature.

Yikes, that sounds like a lot of work.

But as you said, once it is done, you will have a system that will last for years to come. Don't get in a hurry to finish it. I know how hard that can be. But as an old Sergeant in the Army used to tell us:

If you do it right the first time, you won't have to do it a second time.

Good luck!

Well electricians are in smashing my little bungalow to bits while they rewire everything. Four lads and an absolute hive of activity. I think I owe my new neighbour a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine after this! This does mean I get a few days off from the rennovation though.

And unexpected bonus, My mum and dad are heading up to Scotland for two days as a birthday treat for my Dad leaving me in the house on my own! Sarah will be coming out to play today! If I can work out which boxes have her stuff in ha ha!

Well my bungalow is looking in a sorry state. I have sooo much work to do to get it looking good again. Holes and channels cut in plasterboard walls everywhere. It was a bit depressing walking around there to be honest. Next week the heating engineer will be in causing more mayhem re-piping everything then it will be handed over to me to make good.

Never mind, that's for another day. Tonight it's an Argy Bargy rematch in Atlanta! No hand of God this time I hope! C'mon England!! I'm sick of being perenial runners up, I'm 50 years old and I've never seen us win anything!

And for the record...... MY NAME IS NOT SHARON!

I know that having holes all over your house is overwhelming, we did this to my mom's house to run new wiring. This is really important for your safety. When it was done we patched all the holes in a few days. It will get better and you will be able to rest knowing the house won't burn down.

Hang in there Sharon

Thanks for that Betty 🤣

Yeah I know all about the safety side, that's why I'm doing it. The wiring is original and the house was built around 1967 ish! I am both a former architectual design draftsman and a heating engineer so I know where to invest my money wisely. I'm putting the bulk of my funds under the hood so to speak, new wiring, new pipework, new heating system, new kitchen. The rest is fluff that i can take my time over if funds run out.

Mums bungalow needs a rewire, built in 68. When I had to replace a few things I found the start of green wire death.
