It is a steep learning curve Charlotte. This is what I have learned so far for what it is worth:-
To see if the band is right, put the bra on reversed and upside down (cups pointing down to your butt). If the band is snug not tight the band size is good.
If you then put it on and the band is tight or rolls down at the sides then your cup is too small.
When you put it on lean forward and scoop and swoosh all the breast material from your armpit to the front to check how you fill a cup.
If the central gore (the bit where the wires touch your sternum) is not flush against your chest wall, your cup is too small.
If you have a quad boob effect when viewed in profile ie the top of the cups create an indentation in your tissue then the cup is too small.
The wires should go around to your sides encompassing all the breast material, if they press into the side of your tissue or sit on that material, the cup is too small.
If the wires are moving down out of the imframamary fold and down your chest it is likely your cups are pushing the bra away because the cups are too small or the band is too loose.
You know if the band is too loose as you can get more than a couple of fingers behind at the back and the back tends to ride up your back.
If the bra cup gaps at all then the cup is too large or the cup depth is too deep (common with balcony bras). But make sure to check both breasts as it is very common to have one boob bigger than the other and you should always size for the larger cup.
If you do have one larger than the other you can pop a "chicken fillet" enhancer or a foam insert at the bottom outer side in the smaller cup to even thing out.

PS I'm sure there is loads more than that to learn but that's what I have learnt so far. Plus I haven't even covered shape and style there! That is another subject.
