Where will I live if we split up? A suggestion.

I'm sharing something here that I hope comes to attention of anyone who's considering coming out to their significant other or who has recently done so...

I lived in NJ with my partner (now my spouse) for a bunch of years. After I came out to her, we sold our (separate) houses and bought a larger home in Maryland. I have the benefit of being under her excellent health insurance.

I landed here and things seem stable. But it was just as likely that we would have split up and being unable to afford the mortgage on my NJ home, would have sold it and moved elsewhere, possibly in NJ, but PA was also on my short list. As luck would have it, we ended up in MD and I found out that this state mandates insurance coverage for most gender-affirming care, such as facial electrolysis and gender affirming facial surgery. I just had round one of facial surgery and my electrolysis is ongoing. Had I not moved to MD, I would not be getting electro because I wouldn't be able to afford it.

If I'd moved to Pennsylvania it's likely I wouldn't have gotten these procedures as I don't think there's a state-level mandate for insurance coverage.

What I'm trying to say is that if you're trans and it looks like your life is blowing up (I'm sorry) please factor insurance laws into your thinking as you work on your exit strategy. I know there are many other considerations, such as family and employment, but I wanted to put this on your radar screens.
