An annual event spearheaded by the Massachusetts National Organization for Women (Mass NOW) geared toward helping transgender people who menstruate has been cancelled following right wing backlash.
An event page for Trans Period Pride, which is accessible through the Boston Public Library's website, now says that the meeting — which had been scheduled to take place on June 17 — has been canceled, an update that was highlighted by right-wing outlets and social media accounts over the weekend.
Orchestrated by Mass NOW and the MA Trans Political coalition, Trans Period Pride was billed as a "consciousness-raising discussion" about menstrual equality and trans people who menstruate. Research affirms that trans people with periods face unique and intersecting challenges, including the compounding effects of menstrual stigma and transphobia.
No reason was given for the cancelation on either the Boston Public Library or Mass NOW social media. (Them has reached out to both BPL and MassNOW for comment and will update if we hear back.)
The event sparked nationwide coverage, with much of it focusing on Democratic Boston mayor Michelle Wu, whose Office of LGBTQ Advancement was listed as a supporter of the event. The event was slated to include a catered dinner and free period underwear for attendees.
