Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) shared moving words in support of trans youth during a Senate hearing on gender-affirming care on Wednesday.
"If you're a trans kid watching this hearing, if you have friends who are trans kids, if you have family who are trans kids, if you're not trans but you're grappling [with the fact that your] body's changing... There is some intentional effort to make you feel bad about yourself," the former vice presidential candidate stated.
"But you got a lot of people who love you. You got a lot of people who support you. You probably have more people who love and support you than you know."
He also told the youth that their parents may be more understanding than they think, but that if their parents really can't understand, there is another trusted adult out there who can.
"You can find sympathy with an aunt or an uncle or a sibling or a friend or a counselor," he assured them. "You are a beautiful, precious person... and worthy of love as you are."
He also reminded trans youth that they are not alone, that there are other kids grappling with the same challenges, and that there are "a lot of people who want to help you."
