Anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) introduced an amendment to ban transgender people from openly serving in the military, but all House Democrats – joined by four Republicans – voted against it yesterday, defeating the measure.
Boebert introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the military appropriations bill that is generally considered a "must-pass" bill in Congress. Her amendment would have banned any person who expresses "a false 'gender identity' divergent from an individual's sex." The language in the amendment said that trans people "cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service."
While the president signed an executive order banning trans people from the military last year – an order that used similarly insulting language about trans people – and the Supreme Court let that ban go into effect while legal challenges to it are heard by lower courts, Boebert's amendment would have made the ban much more difficult to repeal in the future.
All Democrats voted against her amendment, and they were joined by four Republicans, which, with the slim majority Republicans have in the House, was enough to result in a 212-217 vote against the measure, The Hill reports.
