What a track. What an album. I'm old enough to remember when it came out. I was one of those sorry boys sent off to boarding school and after lights out in the dormitory I would pull out my transistor radio that I'd kept hidden. I would tune into Radio Caroline and put the transistor under my pillow, listening to their fabulous playlists. Every week they'd have the album chart and sometimes they would play the whole album of Dark Side of the Moon, which topped the charts for months and months. So I grew up with that most brilliant of all albums and I still often play it. It's very bitter sweet as my late son (long awful and terribly sad story and not one for now) adored Pink Floyd and asked me to fetch Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here to play by his bedside in hospital.

The next song along is one I've chosen for my funeral, and in the context of this forum, and your comment, allegedly the vocals at the end are a female orgasm I expect somewhere on the internet someone will have debunked the idea so I shan't look it up as it's a kinda cute idea and amuses me.

What a track. What an album.

One of my favorites too. I collected all of their albums for many years up to Division Bell. I was missing two for a complete set. I don't know the names, but it was before they were Pink Floyd. Back then, they were Sigma Six.

My second favorite band was Blue Öyster Cult for much of the same reasons: great music and fantastic lyrics. I still listen to both.

The next track, The Great Gig In The Sky was improvised by Clare Tory.  She was told to cry along to the music. But I've heard it descibed as the best songs to have sex to.

When I hear Wish You Were Here it reminds me of my best mate Anthony who died of heart failure at age 21 after a flu virus destroyed him

I can't imagine how you feel about losing a child. That's not how life is supposed to go.

My sympathys to you.

In my case,losing Anthony meant no matter how low,how depressed I became, I could never take my own life knowing how much he wanted to live

At one stage I had to stop listening to Pink Floyd as it was just feeding in to my darkest thoughts.

Indeed, "I'm not afraid of dying"  after all I've used up 8 lives already, but I know my wife doesn't want me to go first.

I want my funeral to be 30 to 40 minutes of upbeat music ending with Time, Great Gig In The Sky and finally the live version of Going Home from Alchemy, which was incidently, our wedding song

Argh there's such resonance for me in your post, in a good but also sad way.

I played Dark Side of the Moon on my hike just now in response to seeing your signature. Still love it. Wish You Were Here was, I think, my son David's favourite of them all. Shine on, You Crazy Diamond. Oh my. And those words from Dark Side: 'there's someone in my head but it's not me.'

And, would you believe it, three days ago I posted on Facebook (a very rare visit for me) all about Local Hero. I watched it again on my return to England this Friday. And that music ... oh that music.

Although, slightly on topic, well sort-of, I've always loved the Live from Earl's Court concert. My friend here in Surrey, the one who will be keeping an eye on me after my GCS, went to the show. I didn't but days  afterwards the BBC broadcast it as 'Pink Floyd Live from Earl's Court'. I recorded it and it has the most fantastic raw quality, especially Nick Mason's drumming.And probably the best ever live performance of Comfortably Numb. Then they produced 'Pulse' as a DVD from the same show. Also absolutely brilliant but more 'produced'. That was then followed by the CD which, imho, is a big step down. Different tracks, and little of the live feel.

Anyway ... if you want to hear the female orgasm theory of Great Gig in the Sky check out the version on Pulse with vocals by Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, and Claudia Fontaine. Truly brilliant and truly ... well let's just say that they go onto another level of ecstasy 🤣

You know, I've never seen that film but my home club Newcastle United runs out to Mark Knopflers Local Hero every match. It's become a signature tune for Newcastle upon Tyne. I should probably watch it!

It is indeed a very beautiful movie. It makes me cry everytime, as does the theme song.

Mark Knopfler, is of course, a Geordie, which is another reason why it's played.

but not really, I was just trying to show it's not just about the music, not just about the musician, not just the lyrics, it's about undestanding the context of what the whole thing is about.
