I have no issues with there being very strict governance and guard rails put in place before anyone goes through with surgery. It's major irreversible surgery so any patient has to be thoroughly screened for suitability - both physically and emotionally.

The problem is that when governments "pause" something, the pause can go on for years. In 2016, the Veterans Administration stated that Gender Affirming Surgery would be covered for transgender veterans. They held the mandatory public comment period, then paused their decision for eight years. A lawsuit forced them to make a decision, so they decided the decision would be no, they will not cover those surgeries.

I agree that guardrails should be in place, and WPATH, along with other health organizations, already has them. Adding government red tape by bureaucrats instead of medical professionals is just another form of gatekeeping. Medical decisions are none of the government's business.

The UK only partially followed the WPATH guidelines in the past anyway. Now they just go by the ass review...oh, sorry, I forgot the C. They go by the Cass review.
