A September 25 Arkansas Times opinion piece blasts a "truly repellent" recent anti-transgender ad aired by the state's Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders in which a bearded man joins a women's athletic team.
"In the days of Jim Crow, racists made fun of African Americans by putting on blackface and having a minstrel show," the opinion article begins. "In the days of Sarah Sanders, Republicans make fun of transgender people by putting a bearded man in a women's sports outfit and pretending he's trying to join a women's college team."
"Surely we would all condemn the former caricature as vile, bigoted and un-Christian. And we should all condemn the latter, for the same reasons," the author, journalism professor and political commentator Rich Shumate, writes.
Shumate calls the ad "truly repellent," and says it offers "a false caricature that demeans transgender Arkansans" and also "takes credit for doing things she didn't actually do."
"Subtle this ad is not," Shumate states. "To believe this nonsense, you have to swallow the notion that a teenage boy or college-age man would pretend to be female to, what? Win a blue ribbon in a track meet?"
Sanders then appears onscreen and claims that, in 2024, the Biden administration said states must allow "men to play women's sports or we would lose millions in federal funding." The claim is a lie.--------------------
