Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) – who just weeks ago claimed that there is a national crisis of airline pilots "MEOWING and BARKING" because they're becoming furries – lied about schools giving kids gender-affirming care behind their parents' backs at a rally this past Friday, perhaps showing how desperate Republicans are to find an issue that will drive their base to the polls in November.

One of the most outlandish yet persistent myths in the anti-trans moral panic of the 2020s has been the idea that schools are turning kids transgender behind their parents' backs. Depending on the retelling, the schools – and, specifically, teachers – are doing anything from just telling kids that they should become transgender to actually performing gender-affirming surgery on children, all without talking to parents first.

In his 2024 campaign, Donald Trump said several times that schools are forcing kids to undergo gender surgery, something that he stopped mentioning after the election. Now another prominent Republican brought up the myth that doctors are secretly operating on kids at a rally in Mobile, Alabama, on October 2.

"I'm not even gonna get into the transgender nonsense cuz you all know what I feel," Tuberville stated to introduce his rant about transgender issues, "about men in women's sports."

"What gets me is the Biden administration up until President Trump allowed doctors to cut on minors without telling their parents," he continued as the audience started to boo. "Think about that. You're talkin' about government control."

"Can you imagine if your kid would come home one day and says, 'What's wrong with ya? Well, I'm taking these drugs. And I'm getting ready to have surgery because my teachers and my principal says I can.' Folks, we've lost our damn mind."
