NHS England's trans ward policy could increase risk of 'corridor care', report finds

An internal NHS England impact assessment has warned that the new single-sex wards guidance could lead to delays in care and a greater risk of "corridor care" for trans patients.

The assessment, seen by the Guardian and detailed in an 18 October report by the outlet, considered the impact of the guidance across protected characteristics and said practical constraints in hospitals could leave trans people waiting for a suitable space. It stated: "There may be delays and a greater risk of 'corridor care' for trans people with a negative impact on their physical health, mental health and overall wellbeing if side rooms are not available."

It also raised concerns about discrimination and the risk of people being outed through where they are placed on a ward. The assessment said: "Trans people may fear and potentially experience discrimination by being 'outed' as trans through not being accommodated in a ward that aligns with their lived gender or being placed in a side room."

The document warned hospitals may not have the capacity to provide side rooms when needed, "forcing trans people into the potentially distressing situation of being accommodated on wards aligned with their biological sex". It added that trans people may potentially experience discrimination and that this could lead to them "avoiding accessing healthcare at all".

Well duh! So the same body that introduced these rules is also identifying that these are the potential affects of said rules. Any fool can see this would be the outcome but they introduced the rules anyway despite zero pressure at all to do so as far as I can see. Cue a huge wave of discrimination legal cases against NHS trusts as they have laid themselves open to massive liability.

Just to put it into context, these incidents of corridor care are almost exclusively from patients coming in to A&E and deemed not fit to send home. They are not happening for planned operations or treatments. nonetheless, it is still disgusting.

Doctors are extremely risk averse when it comes to liability. The refusal of GP's to get involved with transgender care is a prime example of this. There will be a backlash once cases start rolling in and it will not be limited to the NHS. Employers and businesses all over the country will be bracing themselves for a huge wave of discrimination cases and they will not have a legal leg to stand on I don't think as the law is clear on discrimination against transgender people. This is going to cost an absolute fortune to businesses, shops, public services, civil service, local authorities you name it. All will be left open to cases of discrimination because almost none of them can provide satisfactory alternatives.

I am not yet out but once I transition, if I fall victim to any of this I will certainly be looking at my legal options. Each case raised puts pressure on politicians to do something about it.

Especially if those politicians are named as co-defendants. If they signed the papers, they can be named in the suit.
