Library removes 14-year-old logo because 3 people thought it looked too gay

A North Carolina library dropped the logo it has used for 14 years after three residents told a town commissioner it looked too much like a rainbow.

While it is multicolored, the logo representing the Farmville Public Library does not, in fact, look like a rainbow. It depicts an open book, each page a different color. The colors are in a random order and do not even include every color of the rainbow.

The library made the change after only three residents complained that the logo could accidentally imply support for the LGBTQ+ community. Farmville Mayor Alex Joyner is outraged for several reasons.

"Rainbows are a significant symbol of libraries across the entire U.S.," Joyner told local ABC affiliate News 12. "I believe we all grew up with Reading Rainbow, so to see an action like this take place in the dead of night behind a curtain is really concerning."

Joyner said he was disappointed that the decision was made privately rather than through public discourse. "Choices and decisions like this should be made in the public eye and with public comment," he said.

He also expressed solidarity with LGBTQ+ people. "The library is a symbol of inclusion and is supposed to be welcome to all. For a handful of people to be able to decide who is welcomed and who is not here is unacceptable in my eyes, and I would hate for the town of Farmville and especially the board of commissioners to be seen on the wrong side of that decision for civil rights."

Well, Mr. Mayor:

The Town of Farmville local government owns and operates the Farmville Public Library. It was established in 1930 and officially became a municipal department in 1954.

So, hold a public referendum and change it back.

Who runs the town government? Three people? Or the residents?
