A 15-year-old American high school student has been shot and killed by a fellow classmate, in what has quickly been labeled a hate crime.

Lawrence 'Larry' King was allegedly gunned down in class by 14-year-old Brandon McInerney last Tuesday, and died in hospital two days later after being removed from life support.

The Los Angeles Times reports that King had revealed he was gay and sometimes wore make-up and high heels to school. Friends of the victim said he was often bullied. It is also alleged he had told McInerney that he had a crush on him.
