I can't speak for New Zealand, but I know in the states "Segregation" means solitary confinement, typically 23 hours a day in a cell alone, such treatment maybe is not as bad as being violated/raped in general prison, but it's pretty terrible. Segregation is pretty common in american prisons for the transgendered.
