New men's cosmetic line

Hi all,

Just thought I'd let you know about Jean Paul Gaultier's new line of cosmetics for men.  Picked some up here at Holt's in Canada.  Has a full line, but just got the eye pencil, lip gloss and a powder/bronzer for the face.  I have tried them and all are very nice, especially the bronzer, though may be a shade too dark outside of the srping/summer months or if you don't tan much.

Available at most upscale department stores like Sak's, Neiman Marcus etc. and not overly expensive.

Might be an easy way for new people to start out if they are nervous about buying makeup or don't have an SO to help in that area.  It is available in the men's fragrance department.

I normally wear Lancome that my wife and I pick out when shopping together, but this is nice also.

Why is there Men's makeup?

Same reason that women wear it, to cover flaws, to look younger, to give self confidence and because the makeup manufacturing association woke up one day and slapped their collective forehead and said "Yikes, we've been missing like half the humans on earth in our marketing."

Also, I thought I once read a post of yours comparing MAC to Macy's, but I can't find it now. Which do you prefer and/or recommend: MAC or Macy's?

The Macy's flagship at Union Square.  The Men's store is across Stockton in the old Liberty House, next to the N-M store.

While Macy's sells MAC, I think for a lot of people that the stand-alone MAC stores, like the one on upper Fillmore (At Pine or thereabouts) my offer a bit more of a laid-back atmosphere and less of a audience, as the Make-up section of Macy's is on the ground floor and is packed with people most of the time.  The prices are the same either way.

I think the MAC store on Union Street is bigger than the Fillmore one, but I'm sure they are pretty much the same.

That's kind of nice. I work with theater so I've got to wear make up on stage anyhow... It keeps the lights from washing away your features.

Stage makeup, for Theater, TV, and Movies are all three very different things, because all three use different lighting sources, and different lamps so it all reads very different. BTAIM.  The Macy's stuff seems to be more like to cover up age spots, and having been up three night in a row, or to give yourself some color.  Its pretty light as makeup goes, but it is makeup.

Right. Don't talk to me like I'm a moron. I've worked with theater and film, thank you very much, and I do know the difference.

I'm not, your reading that into it.  I just assumed that most people didn't know the difference, and even if they were aware they didn't know what it was with Theater being mostly incandescent, TV being tungsten and now more and more with LED, and Movies being with as close to natural as they can get.  So Theater needs more brown to tone down the jaundice look that most people have on stage, TV requires color because Tungsten or LED makes white people look like Casper the Ghost, and Movies are very hard, which is why the movie makeup people make the top dollar. 

And I'm not sure that being in the theater makes it OK to wear it elsewhere.  I'm sure Obama has powder before Meet the Press, but ain't wearing it meet the troops kind of deal.  Most rock guys use eyeliner when they are playing on stage, but not off stage as a general rule - emo bands notwithstanding.

I don't think I implied that. I don't wear make up when I'm not acting, and I don't really intend to. I will when I'm "in costume." That is part of the costume. Other than that, there is no reason for me to.

I walked into a Macy's the other day and asked for advice about concealers because I didn't like my scarring and the woman there told me about her mens and unisex lines and how she has a lot of male clients, a lot more than anyone would imagine, and that it's just for looking better, hiding imperfection, etc, nothing female about it.

Which when you think about it is true, not that I need any convincing about if it's okay to wear makeup or not (everyone will say it's not, anyway.)

Fortunately for me, my wife is blind in one eye. So I don't have to do much to look sexy to her.

FYI, there's a Macy's Men's store (as well as a regular Macy's) in the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, if you don't want to drive into the city.  Not sure if they have the makeup kit there or not (will have to look next time I'm down there) but there is a Sephora and Bare Escentuals in the same mall.

Since I've been a spooky goth/rivethead for millenia, I've always worn makeup of some flavour. I think I started when I was 17. I think nothing of doing some eyeliner, eyeshadow, black nail polish, and dark lipcolour.

OK I might have missed this, I can really be blonde sometimes but what would be the big differences between makeup for men and makeup for woman?
