This week, people throughout the country observe the 10th anniversary
of the tragic and untimely loss of Matthew Shepard, a promising
21-year-old college student who was beaten to death and hanged from a
fence outside of Laramie, Wyo. just because he was gay.
This somber remembrance evokes painful feelings that are difficult to
relive. I was also a 21-year-old college student in October 1998, and
I keenly recall how deeply fearful I was that the same thing might
happen to me.
