Ann Arbor, MI, USA. The influences exerted by gender expectations is often debated, with the assumption that a child's success is dependent on peer-group approval (typically of the child's own gender). The principal focus has been on appearance role, and social placement.
The more confomant a child is to her or his gender group, it has been believed, the more likely the child is to succesd; non-confomance is the path to failure.
However, a new study refines and deepens conclusions about preschooler behavior by distinguishing between same- and opposite gender influences.
