Q: Why does my Avatar have that scroll bar thingy on it?

A: Its width exceeds 144 pixels, so the forum software only shows the leftmost 144 pixels by default.

Avatars are limited to 144 pixels wide by 168 pixels tall.  And if you exceed 168 pixels tall, the software shrinks the picture to fit into a 168-pixel-high box.

So, if you're preparing your own avatar, it's best if you make it exactly 144x168.

(NB: I arrived at the dimensions empirically (by trying different sizes to see what worked.)  If the exact largest size is different, please PM me and I'll change this post.)

As we say in the military "Change 1 of many changes...)

My new avatar is 150 pixels wide.  I changed the size of my browser window, and the scroll bar went away.

So, basically, if you want the most people to see your whole avatar (and not just the left side,) don't make it too wide.  How wide is 'too wide'?  It depends on the width of the viewers' browser window.
