Protest and counterprotest faced off on the State House lawn yesterday morning when a small band of same-sex marriage supporters strode into the crowd of hundreds opposed.

Supporters marched past men waving the scarlet banners of a Catholic organization, and their chant of "Love means everyone" was greeted by a single cry of "Abomination."

Deeper into the crowd, past signs showing electrical plugs made to fit together, two men began to quarrel. A man opposed to same-sex marriage bent his head along with two women in apparent prayer for the other man. Moments after raising his head, he lunged with arm outstretched as the supporter walked just out of reach and toward the steps, bound for the Senate committee hearing on a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
