August 30, 2006 11:40 am — BATAVIA — The Batavia City School District today gave parents the opportunity to see what their high school students will be taught about transgender issues.
If parents prefer that their students not be part of such first-day-of-school discussions, the parents can write a note and the district will make other arrangements for these students, said district Superintendent Richard Stutzman Jr.

The meeting with students is the next step for the district, which has already met with parents and trained staff to support a transgendered science teacher who will start the school year as a woman.

So far, no student has withdrawn from the district because of the issue, Stutzman said, but four parents have written letters to the district requesting that their children be excluded from a classroom led by the teacher. Stutzman would not elaborate on the reasons the parents gave, but added that normally more than 100 students would be in this teacher's classes.

The superintendent plans to meet this week with the science teacher and talk about how the issue will be addressed in her classes on the first day of school. Stutzman doesn't expect the teacher to talk much about it in class but understands that something may need to be said.

"We don't want it to be the elephant in the room," said James A. Spitz Jr., an attorney working for the school district.

The staff, many parents, the teachers' union and others have been supportive of the science teacher, the superintendent said.

I thought the presenation was very good.  Simple and straight to the point.

From what I recall reading, this teacher usually has about 100 students per year.  As of a few days ago, only 4 parents want their child removed.  This speaks volumes.
