If we have learned nothing else from over 200 celebrations of July Fourth, it's that the flag of freedom takes time to unfold.

It wasn't that long ago that only white (assumed heterosexual) men counted for anything in the public square. As a Christian, I'm struck by the link between the assumed gender of God and the inherent privileges extended to those who share that gender.

Back in the day, men were men and God was, too. Today, spurred on by the civil rights movement's blessed insistence upon "freedom and justice for all," the once closed topic of gender and gender roles is receiving fresh attention and with it has come a renewed interest in the gender of God.
