So, after being full time for a year and 10 months, I've finally gone to the court and filed the name change forms. It was pretty simple, just take the completed (well, I did forget a couple things) forms to the probate office, pay the (increased to $355!) fee, and get a court date.

So, my hearing is scheduled for November 20th, yay! I can't wait!

Congratulations, Sarah.  Figure out now, who you need to change and get the necessary forms.  And try to relax as the days go by.  It will take place faster than you think.

Ok, I have a question. I didn't really know who to choose for the newspaper to file it in, so I just chose the OC Register. Come to find out, they charge a whopping $413 to list name changes! However, one of their community-based subsidiaries, Irvine World News, only charges $83. Is it possible for me to just list it in Irvine World News instead of OC Register, since they are both technically the same entity? Or do I HAVE to use the one I specified on the forms? That would really suck if I have to go with OC Register and pay $413 for the same thing that Irvine World News would do for only $83.

I'd inquire, as in SF you have to have it in print for x days, but I'm not sure it matters where, as long as its in print, but OC might have some specific (read: kickback) going where only one would be acceptable.  But as long as its indexed, I think it fits the law.

Ouch.  In Oregon it is posted in the courthouse and that is it.  No additional fees.  I am glad I live here.  Check with the clerk and see what they really want.

Well, in the list of valid newspapers that OC has it does list Irvine World News as being a valid newspaper to list it in. However, it has OC Register as a separate entity in that list. I don't know if the judge actually looks at the newspaper's name that closely to see that I listed it in the same one that I wrote on the forms, but I also don't want to go through the process of listing it only to find out at the hearing that it's not valid! Ugh, this sucks! Does anyone here have any experience printing it in a different newspaper than the one you wrote on the forms, and was it a problem?

Yikes my name change was $137 billed to my MC here in Ontario.

Yeah, but Cali is very broke, so a lot of those fees went way up in the last few years.  Back in the 80s it cost about $75.

Well, I've done some more searching and the notices that are listed as "Appeared in: Orange County Register" are specified as having been listed in various community newspapers, like Irvine World News, so it may be possible for me to list it in one of the smaller subsidiaries and still have it be recognized as having been listed in the Orange County Register. I'm going to ask the newspaper when I go to file it if they know anything about this.

Most places have some sort of 'legal register' whose primary purpose is to print such notices, along with fictitious business names and other court stuff, they tend to be the least expensive.

Well, I guess I'll call the court - if I can get through - and ask them what the deal is. Or better yet, I'll go down to the newspaper first and see what they say. I'm sure they've encountered this situation before. Who knows. Wish me luck!

Ps. Thanks lpfix2009 :) I appreciate that!

Update: I had to go to the court and file an "[Amended] Order to Show Cause for Change of Name" to change the name of the newspaper I file it in. After waiting in that god awful line again I finally updated it, went to the newspaper and submitted it. So I'm good to go now. All I have to do is wait for the court date and I'll be done with that, finally!
