First we had the whole was the male figure skater a bit too 'over the top' (media talk for "flaming homosexual") for what?  For being a male figure skater?  Wow, what's next, water is wet?

OK, so to keep things in balance the Olympics made the GOLD MEDAL WINNING Canadian women's hockey team apologize for it's little post victory party.  Now, we all know that if this were the Russian or American, or even Canadian men's team, nothing would have been said.  And despite the whole 'it was about one of them being 17' (yeah, like minors never drink a beer in Canada - Doug and Bob McKenzie anyone?) it was really about how the prissy pants at the IOC felt about these pictures.
(Slideshow, so sorry in advance)

Personally, I like strong, physical women so trying to fire up the Zamboni and drive it around was just a bonus.

So yeah, it's very shocking that a bunch of Olympic gold medal level hockey players acted like, well, hockey players.

So girls, act like hockey playing jocks and take back that apology!  You had every right to do that.  While your at it, since your real good with sticks and all, you might help the IOC with that stick that they have jammed so far up their ass you can see it when they open their mouth.

PS, shots #4, 5, 16 are wonderful, and #23 is killer.

She's actually 18, it's legal in Calgary, but not British Columbia(the age is 19 there).

The whole drama about this is ridiculous.  Congratulations Canada!  That's all anyone should be saying.

On the plus side, their apology didn't give any ground:
Quote"The members of Team Canada apologize if their on-ice celebrations, after fans had left the building, have offended anyone," read its statement. "In the excitement of the moment, the celebration left the confines of our dressing room and shouldn't have."
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/olympics/85637107.html

There's no apology whatsoever for the celebration itself - just the location, and any offense it might have caused (yeah right, it's a gold medal winning Canadian hockey team in Canada, it ain't offending anyone but some stuffy old foreigners on the IOC).

Hah, I read that as "We're sorry if our completely inoffensive behavior somehow managed to offend someone.  If you were offended, it's probably your own fault."
  •

kyril

Yep. I normally hate apologies like that because they usually come from people who did do something offensive. But in this case, I think it's absolutely the right way to handle it.

It does help that I'm Canadian and a hockey fan.

I thought everyone in Canada was a hockey fan (more or less) - it's like a huge national sport deal, and I'm sure the Great White North felt the same way about those girls dominating in hockey as the USA did when our women's softball team pretty much destroyed the world 6 years ago.  It's just a Canada deal (largely because you can keep outdoor rinks open for what?  10 months a year?) the US and the former USSR.  But, in those places, it's a HUGE deal.  Like that soccer game stuff is in Europe (for reasons I don't get).

And yeah, the fake "oh my god I'm so sorry (I got caught)" that we tend to inflict on TV preachers and political types (because they deserve it) is getting out of hand.  I mean, do we expect hockey players NOT to party after winning a gold medal?  That would be weird.  Like anyone was somehow surprised that 'the world's greatest golfer, internationally famous guy and BILLIONAIRE, Tiger Woods' was getting some on the side?  I really hated that whole mia culpa.  Really, I so wanted him to walk out there and say:  "Hey, you know what?  I'm Tiger F-ing Woods and I'm the greatest golfer in the history of golf.  I've already made a billion from you chumps, and if I never hit another ball again I've got it made, but you know what?  I'm going to keep on beating everyone else, just because I can.  I know I won't be getting that extra money from Buick anymore, but hey, I can get rid of that boring car and get the Maserati GranTurismo that I ought to be driving.  So I'm not sorry about anything.  Now bring on the white women."  Hell, I would have started watching golf.

And I even find that argument about using the rink to be stupid.  Those girls OWN that rink.  Now and forever, that is their ice.  So why not?  How much time on ice, how many falls, how much pain went into them being good enough to be there, and good enough to win?  Lots.  So good for them.  The photos reminded me of the times when we go up and party on the stage after the show.  It's our stage (in that we do all the work on it) so why not?  And the other staff people are out in the seats and they are having their beers in their area, so too are we.

What is it some kind of news that jocks like to party?  That they expect to party when they win a world championship?  Not to anyone who went to a college/university or high school with a super-huge athletic program its not.  Want a party, find the dorm floor where the football team lives.  It's just that easy.  I kinda want my hockey players to be beer drinking, body checking, cigar chomping, Zamboni joy-riding types regardless of gender.

It's just the same thing that happened to rock concerts when they went from being 'outlaw' type events to civic economic development projects, what happened to Marti Gras once the corporations took it over - the working to make everything as bland and homogenized as possible, least the most easily offended among us ever get offended.

So, here's what I'm going to do.  I'm going to buy me one of those jersey's from that team (#25) and wear it to honor not only their hockey, but their being world class jocks too.

FKNA. Congratulations, Canada. Just for that, I'm a Canadian women's hockey fan.

I've heard rumors that many snowboarders occasionally indulge in the illicit agricultural abundance of British Columbia. Also, Bode Miller is Bode Miller.

God, I love the Winter Olympics.

Yeah, test snowboarders for pot.  Since when did marijuana become a performance enhancing drug for anyone not in the Grateful Dead?

p.s. "Mia Culpa" -- that's an inspired misspelling. It sounds like a drag queen name. I might start using it ironically online. (If you don't mind.)

All I see in those photos is a few world-class athletes having a very well-deserved good time. I also happen to find world-class female athletes quite attractive, and the cigar and hockey gear are added turn-ons. I'd love to be on the ice partying with them! So sue me.

Well!
I'm so offended. They should have had a nice cup of tea and some of those little cakes with icing on them.

I strongly think that the four man USA Bob-sleigh team had a quiet night with pizza and lemonade. Just to set a good example.

How are we ever going to convince kids that team work, hard work, talent and sweat pays dividends, and one of the greatest dividends is to openly celebrate with your team mates. Not as if they went to the local strip club, got drunk and p**d in the street as happens over here with (some of) the footy players.

Tekla wasn't Mia Culpa a song by Abba?

If at first you don't succeed, tidy it all up and pretend you never tried.  Use my line and say: Hey, it was like that when I got here.

They should make the most of it. Come 2012, anyone caught celebrating in London will probably be slapped with an ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order).
