Eunuchs demand law recognizing third sex category

BHUBANESWAR: Eunuchs in Orissa reiterated their demand for a legislation recognizing third gender category to ensure them political and social rights here on Wednesday.

The Eunuch Association here held a conference to demand a legislation for third gender category, which it claims will give them a sexual as well as social identity.

"We do not have any political, socio-economic rights. Though these rights have been only written in papers but ultimately we have not been able to enforce the rights because we have not been recognized as the third sex in this country. By coming out with legislation, it will be important for us and we will be able to also enforce rights in those contexts," said Bibhu Mohanty, a legal advisor to eunuchs.
