What are the best books to give someone if you're just coming out of the closet? Are there any in particular that stand out as being extremely informative/thought provoking? Are there any good FTM ones? I'm especially looking for some that I can give to my family.

Lane, I wrote my book specifically to help my family.  I wanted to help them understand what I was thinking, what pushed me, and what motivated me to give up everything to pursue this course. I was not sexually motivated and it shows in the book. In other words, you won't be ashamed to have your dad and mom read it.

From the letters I have received from readers, I have clearly conveyed that message.... what goes through our heads... how do we think and react to the world.... just how powerful this train is that we can not stop.

I feel somewhat awkward in making this post. It seems so much like a shameless plug.  But you asked the question and I wanted to answer.  I'm sure that my friends here know, I don't like to push my book in the forum.

That does look like a pretty good one. I'll save my pennies. Any others you can recommend? The only reason I ask is that when my parents (specifically, my mom) finds out something "special" about my sister and me (like when I was diagnosed bipolar and my sister with asperger's) she goes out and buys books and reads EVERYTHING on the subject. I'd prefer to give her the reading material before-hand so she doesn't get any missconceptions from reading the wrong thing.

There's an awesome book called "TRANSforming Families" put out by P-FLAG!
I just gave it to my folks over x-mas and they appreciated it!

I've found True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism - For Families, Friends, Coworkers and Helping Professionals by Mildred L. Brown and Chloe Ann Rounsley to be one of the best primers available on the subject. It's fairly even-handed, covering both f2m and m2f equally.

My favorites would be: Squirrel Cage - Cindi Jones
She's Not Here - Jennifer Boylan
                                Conundrum - Jan Morris

All 3 are outstanding, but because of my age I am slightly partial to Jan Morris's "Conundrum."

Someone gave me Phallus Palace, and I lent it to them. It worked well, as they didn't believe it was actually possible ( they didn't doubt my conviction at all ). The book has some good essays by doctors, too. There was a good quote in the first chapter that almost broke my dad down in tears... Gah, they still have the book; I wish I could pull out that quote...

Edit: Forgot to say who it was by. Dean Kotula.

Also, "Becoming a Visible Man" by Jamison Green.

The Phallus Palace has some pretty graphic surgery photos that might be hard for parents to see.

There's Loren Cameron's photo book "Body Alchemy" too.
