I was doing some research on trans-people in the Federal (DOD) civilian workforce and ended up writing a legal group for the policies concerning the subject. This is what they responded with:

QuoteThere are no restrictions on employment for trans people in the civilian workforce.  The current position of the federal government is that trans employees are covered by laws that prohibit sex discrimination.  However, in practice, some agencies are better than others about implementing that policy.  If you have any problems, we can refer you to a supportive person in OPM.

So while DADT didn't do anything (at this point) for transgendered in the military, apparently you can still serve in the civilian workforce.
