Your "style" and why you picked it?

Before I go on, just know I'm not dissing anyone by describing my own observations below. I'm just really curious about this topic and especially since many of us didn't get to grow up being treated as male/living as male in our earlier lives  I often wonder if something like perceived notions of how to act, dress, talk, BE male in society might be slightly off and add to creation (or co-opting) of styles? Then again, what makes some cis guys choose a style like "douche" and run with it? lol I'm not taking a serious approach to this topic because I do think people should be able to express themselves however they want, but whenever one does that, they have to realize that the rest of society will most likely treat them a certain way because of it. That's just the way it is. I've been called emo before, even though I'm not just because people saw certain things about my style and applied those to previous things they've seen and associated with that term. If you really, really love wearing baggy pants half way off your ass that are 5 sizes to big for you, more power to you, but you're gonna catch some slack from somewhere because of it. In order to rock a style that you are seriously in-tune with and you don't even care if it's a stereotype then you have to be able to let comments roll off you too.

I followed some vid links recently that led me to a channel on youtube with a bunch of FTMs talking about certain topics of the week or something like that. Anyway, this one guy was doing the total "wigger" "gangster" schtick. I'm pretty sure it wasn't an act - like he literally wanted to be that way. Hey that's cool, I'm one of those people that is pretty open to whatever someone wants to do that isn't hurting someone else, but I just really wonder about super stylized (basically stereotypes) like that and why people decide to do that. Like they have a list they're checking off: sideways hat [check], air jordans [check], over sized b-ball attire [check], latest Lil' Wayne CD [check], signs with hands [check], lingo [check] ... you know what I mean? Now I'm not just picking on that dude in particular, this can be any style. Emo kid, punker, skater, whatever it is.

I once knew this (cis)guy that would change his whole persona about once every 6 months. First he was a redneck into guns and hunting, then it was a biker (biker gang type, then that morphed into the crotch-rocket type), then a wigger who wanted to play b-ball and rap all the time, then he got all into golf, and then diving ... the dude was just insane! I mean it just spun my head. The more I talked to him, the more it seemed he was so desperately trying to be "cool" in the eyes of some peer group that he was willing to do anything - throw himself 110% into the far end of whatever his latest kick was and then drop it as soon as people started making fun of him (which did happen because, yeah, when you try that hard and go that far off the deep end, they will). Much later on I discovered that he came from a family that never really paid attention to him at all - so he was always doing things to GET attention. Total correlation there imo!

With the proliferation of reality tv, it seems being a douche bag is the new "in" thing as well. Like why would you want to strive to be a douche bag?

People can say style is a very personal thing but I think a lot of times it actually isn't. People are often patterning their "personal" styles after other people they like/admire, etc. or the peer group they hang with (or want to hang with) in order to feel more accepted and gain approval ... to "be cool".

So having said all that, what's your style? And don't worry, like I said, I'm not out to diss anyone, just want to hear your own take on why it is you do what you do and look the way you do.

For me? I've been through a number of styles but none have strayed too far from the core style of what I like to call "eclectic". Yeah, it's just like the furniture people who have a mishmash of styles from contemporary to antique and can't decide on a specific thing so they call it eclectic and somehow make it work. I absolutely love my skinny jeans (the typical "emo" trademark), but I like argyle sweaters too. I like vintage stuff, buy I like uber contemporary modern stuff like Tokyo Flash watches. My goal has always been to be a little different. Even when I was in school I learned early on I was never going to be a part of the popular crowd or any other clique (couldn't even get in with the A/V kids or the band crowd! lol) so I was just kinda left to do my own thing. And you bet I've had some major influences along the way - people I've admired their style and "borrowed" one or two things to suit my own purposes and make me happy. But I think the end result is more uniquely me than if I had a check list for a "type" I was going for.

Thoughts?

I'm from a fairly low-key, outdoorsy city, and pretty much everyone wears jeans/shorts, a t-shirt, and athletic shoes.  It works well for me.  :)
Oh I'm a lucky man to count on both hands the ones I love

I definitely see what you mean here. I notice it everywhere though, in the trans community as well as amongst cis people (particularly young/teenage or pre-teen men). In some ways it can almost be like they're trying to find out what does work for them, or in some cases it's an effort to fit in in some way or something along those lines.

I agree though: to each their own. It is kind of interesting, however.

My personal style? Hm, well, for the most part I prefer jeans and a button-up with the sleeves rolled. That seems to be what I'm most comfortable wearing. In cooler weather I also like sweatshirts (sometimes pull-over hooded, sometimes zip-up hooded, sometimes zip-up with a standing collar), zip-up collared sweaters, and jackets of various kinds, but nothing that really draws attention (just because I'm not drawn to things like that, not because I want to blend in or anything) -- though I do have a sweet leather and canvas jacket with various patches and rivets and pins that I love, especially for it's Che patch. I also, more often than not, wear a hat of some kind because I like them and my eyes are sensitive to the sun. If I didn't wear glasses, I'd have a collection of aviators, too. For footwear it totally varies: on hot days I like to wear sandals to help keep cool, but I've been wearing my Adidas sneakers a lot, and still like wearing my boots. Admittedly I also like wearing dress shoes from time to time, but I like to experiment with those; for example, I currently have a pair of rich tan leather and suede shoes, and I have a thing for a nice pair of wingtip shoes even though I don't own a pair...yet.

I'd love to rock suits, at least casual suits, once I've lost a bit more weight and/or feel that I would fill one out better. I think that is a sharp look.

I'm not really sure what to call my style, to be honest.

For style ideas or inspirations or whatever I like magazines like Esquire and the such, and sometimes pull from them though I can't really say I exactly match what's there. There's a bit of eclecticism to my style at times as well, and I like to pull from different things without going too far into a totally different style. Just incorporate something here or there. I'd really like to incorporate suspenders or a waistcoat with totally casual attire at some point -- we'll see.

I've gone through different styles, so to speak, but never really anything definitive. I've just chalked it up to trying to find my own style, and I think I've found it with what I have now. I've kind of sort of stumbled upon it from trying different things and then keeping what works or what I like. Really, it's sort of just evolved on its own in a way.

I don't follow styles really, if I see a piece of clothing I like, I buy it. Simple as that. If you wanna call it mixing styles or whatever, then so be it, but I've rarely ever followed a certain style or trend except for maybe a couple short phases. Pants: I like straight leg-slim fitting-skinny jeans; Shorts: surfer style shorts, some cargo, board shorts, dockers, dickies. I love my shorts. Shirts: All kinds of t shirts except for ones with cartoons on it (unless its a comic book character lol), plaid, polos, v necks, button ups(short and long sleeve). And anything that has White Sox or Chicago Bears on it. And I love my hats, specifically 59 fifty New Era hats.

the typical "emo" trademark
Side note: Skinny jeans were mostly worn by skaters before "emo" kids took over...cuz the actual and traditional emo kids didn't wear skinnies, it wasn't really until the scene happened.

Whats funny is I was questioning the same thing about how fellow FTM's carry themselves.. Idk how to say this without sounding like an overconfident douche but I have been part of the "popular" clique. And it had influenced my style, I have to admit. I've always been a skater but recently drifted away from that amazing hobby. I went from a skin tight pants and skater shirts phase, to an abercrombie and fitch, hollister phase. Now I am kind of in between but definitely have dropped the SKIN TIGHT jeans. I stick with straight leg now. Definately love the levis! I'm usually in a skate brand shirt, A&F, Hollister, or even Polo shirts. It depends on where I'm going. I like having a nice watch on and love hats but I know I'll really look like a lesbian with a fitted cap on.. I'm not masculine enough to pull it off without getting overly noticed so I've been avoiding them until I start T. But yeah! That's pretty much it. Honestly, I really care about the way I look and am up to date with the latest fashion.. It's just who I am! But I don't judge(or try not to!) anyone else who isn't.. TOO ridiculous in my opinion. I keep it to myself anways :p

My "style" depends on the situation.  It is meant to be functional, yet allow me to go "damn, I look good" if I happen to catch a glimpse of my reflection somewhere.

For example, at school and at work, I wear nice jeans (without rips or other types of decorations), a button-up and/or sweater, and non-slip chemical and oil resistant boots, with a lab coat and goggles as well for work.   If it happens to be really hot, then a polo of either solid or stipped pattern will be the upperbody garment of choice.

If I am just going to the store or nowhere really, then jeans or shorts with either a t-shirt, tank, or sweatshirt are alright.  If I am going out for exercise or walking the dog at high noon on a 30 degree day where the persperation starts the minute you think about going outside, then it is basketball shorts, an A-shirt, and activity-appropriate footwear for me (though the shirt usually comes off to mop the sweat from my face when this is the case).

All garments are close-fitted, but not tight. Optimum range of motion and safety are the goals when it comes to fit; the fact that well-fitting clothes makes for a nicer figure is a pleasant bonus.  All garments are also clean and in good condition.  I do make an effort to make sure colors match and are complimentary to my coloration.

As to why I picked it:  practicality, safety, and pride in my appearance.

Well since everything looks better on tall people, I don't think anything looks good on me being short & fat. I've been wearing army style pants & band shirts since high school, so, about the last 20 years.

If I could get significantly smaller, but in reality, I've got a ton of muscle underneath, so I'm short & thick no matter what. But I'd like to be able to look good in things like the coat & boots in this video:

I wear baggy shorts and jeans and T-shirts with the occasional button-up. Not sure what that would be.

Not necessarily true.  It requires more work and attention to detail, but there are clothes that look great on short people (and in turn make short people look great).  As someone who is of a much shorter build than most people in my area, I have much experience in this matter.  You want to look as streamlined as possible, so that the eye can travel smoothly from your shoes to your face without being distracted.  Pick vertical stripes over horizontal since vertical stripes tend to draw the eye to move up and down to follow the pattern.  Wear dark pants and a lighter shirt rather than the oposite configuration so that the eyes move from toes to head rather than from head to toes.  Do not wear a belt that stands out; it cuts your figure in half, and thus makes you appear shorter.

There are many tips and tricks you can incorporate into your wardrobe to make your clothes look good on you, no matter what your build.  It just might take a little more effort for those of us who are not average.

I don't know what my style is and I never consciously picked one. I just wear what's comfortable. I like button ups, preferably silk or something soft. I prefer pants over jeans. I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the world that isn't crazy about hoodies. I find the hood annoying. Rather just have a collar.

All you guys style is very similar. Mines sorta different. I kinda dress emo/goth.
Ive got purple and black hair. Its got red and blue in it too.
I dress mainly in pair of raggy looking jeans and a black tee.
Sometimes blue tee. Really my dress sense is crap and has always been but its mainly down the gothy emo route.
Clothes never really meant much to me but that just seems to be the dress sense I came too.
Reason I dress like that is because It was always the type of stuff that made me feel good wearing when I was presenting as female most of the time and really when Im presenting male I dress like that but more masculine. *shrugs*

i've been told that i dress like a pothead. not that i try to use my clothes to advertise that i smoke to the whole world, but the fact that people can just "spot" me by what i wear.

usually i wear carpenter jeans or old straight cut jeans with tshirts and sometimes flannels. if it's hot.. well i guess now i will wear those skater man tank tops. never could before /shrug/ i wear skate shoes or old nikes 99% of the time unless it's inappropriate for the situation (like dressing up.) and speaking of dressing up, save a few tragic misfortunes i've had when i began delving into the world of mens clothing, i think i can do it quite well. so i don't look like a complete derelict all the time. when i want or need to look nice, i do. i own plenty of ralph lauren and such to get me through those occasions.. sweaters, polos, etc and a nice summer suit. i'm getting a dark grey suit for more formal occasions when i head up to school. montreal has world-famous tailors.

I like to wear suits with either Dr. Marten or tennis shoes when I go out.
If I am just bumming around the home, it is jeans and t-shirt normally.
Until I have surgery, I love any excuse for a coat, especially long coats that hid hips and the chest.  I have a feeling this may make a huge shift after surgery though since I have learned over the years how to hide things and now I can actually start enjoying life without being noticed.

I'm a jeans, black t-shirt, and a plaid button-up with rolled up sleeves kind of guy. I do a lot of my shopping from Buckle/BKE - it was the first store I went into where I bought men's clothing, so I have a soft spot for it. I'll usually scope out the website and then go to JcPenney or some other store and try to find what I want sans the expensive designer label. I usually wear Boys skate shoes, since I have tiny feet (Size 6 in Boys). They're cheap and cost half of what men's shoes do.

I usually just rock graphic ts and jeans, or a button-down. I dunno what you'd call my style .... poor and cheap? I shop at thrift stores and like I said, I go for ts and jeans, and denim or leather jackets. I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to my impression on people. They probably think I'm lame. :P

My style mostly consists of button-down shirts that are either solid colored or have 60s-and-70s-esque patterns (like florals and paisley, but nothing too loud and ridiculous), straight-legged/skinny pants, double-breasted overcoats or blazers, and pointy boots or oxford shoes. I like a lot of black, but colors work too (I have a velvet purple trench coat with gold buttons that I wore every day during winter when I was a high-school freshman). Sometimes I like scarves and ties and other things, or vests, but basically that's it. I guess my style could be called "vintage." I've always looked up to 60s/70s rockers and old-timey "dandies" as Fashion Inspiration, so naturally I've kind of modeled my style after those types of people. I don't think what I do could really fall into any stereotype, except maybe Hipster. Although I don't wear a lot of Ironic T-Shirts.

I wouldn't necessarily say I have some specific style that I adhere to... Although my main rule is that I've got to be able to move around in it without any trouble. A while ago when I had attempted to wear feminine clothes I had this problem where I didn't feel like I could do anything but sit and stand, so I've never gone back to that haha...

Anyways, generally for me I buy dark colored slim/straight cut jeans. As mentioned above, if I buy lighter jeans they make me look short and emphasize the hip area in general. As far as shirts go... Generally t-shirts have some sort of design on them or superhero (but not those cheesy joke ones). Also I wear a bunch of plaid button shirts. In addition to that I've got shirts/pants that give off slight "emo" vibes but I just mix them in to what I already have going. I've also got a few cardigans and a pair of "parachute pants" which give off feminine vibes but I wear them anyway since I like them. I wear Converse and Dr. Martens boots... Basically I'll wear anything I see and like and know will look okay on my short figure. The "style" originated from trial and error of previously attempting to wear really tight skinny jeans, or just things in general that either restricted movement or made me feel uncomfortable.

Off topic, but...that guy's voice sounds really familiar. Do you know whether he has been in any other bands? Or does he just sound like someone in another band? Unfortunately I can't even think of which band, but I might be able to track it down...or should I just look into it myself?

Apologies for all the questions: it's late so I figured I'd ask since I won't get a good chance to look until tomorrow evening.
