So I'm filling out some online applications,
And I've reached that annoying part of the process where they ask for your gender.
Gender, not biological sex.
The choices are 'Male' and 'Female'
There is no, 'I'd rather not disclose,' Option,
Which frankly, pisses me off to no end.

So looking through the equal opportunity crap,
I see that it includes 'Gender identity' Some employers do NOT include this,
So it has me thinking...that I wanna check that little 'Male' box. (( Hah, Mailbox ))

But I wonder, is this consider 'lying,'
I mean, I've been diagnosed by a therapist to have GID,
So if they had any questions, I could provide my letter to the employers so they don't think I'm nuts.

But I just don't quite know what to do,
I mean, around strangers, I pass, so...I'm thinking...that I wanna...

What do you guys do about the stupid gender box?

Well if you live in America, you can check male with no problem to my understanding. They no longer allow employers to verify gender through social security, so it doesn't matter, they would never know. http://metroweekly.com/poliglot/2011/09/social-security-ends-gender-no.html

Get your gender marker changed.

>_<

.__.; But isn't it expensive to do that?
Because you have to change your birth certificate, license, and everything else with it?

Just check 'male'. You're right, they're asking for your gender, not your sex, so you could defend yourself based on that if there were any problems (I doubt there would be).

I recently got  new job through an employment centre, and was eligible for a government subsidy on my wages - they asked for my sex and my case worker told me to just check 'male' since there was such slim a chance that anyone would double-check this. Besides, soon you will be able to change your gender markers and all the paperwork you'll have filled out will match up with the sex on your ID anyways.

Not that simple depending on where you live.  For instance, in my state you can't change your gender marker on your ID until you have a irreversible surgery.  Hysto in this instance is what they mean but you can get it changed with a carefully worded letter from top surgery.

Yeah, check what the laws in your state are. In my state (WI) all you need is a letter from a therapist or your doctor stating that you're living full time as male and that your license ought to reflect that. No surgery necessary. I don't even think you need to be on T. I almost didn't believe it was possible, but I just had it done in November and it was really easy, although the lady at the DMV had to verify that it was, in fact, the law.

If your state is like this then get it done, there's nothing like seeing the M on your ID. But, even if you can't do it, I still don't see why you couldn't tick "male" on a question asking for your gender, as everyone else said.

I thought you could get a US passport with the gender you identify with as long as you have a letter from a therapist or physician stating that you've BEGAN transition, and all US documents trump all state documents. I live in TN. They won't ever change your birth certificate gender. So you have to go through the US passport, then SS, then ID or something like that.

You can, but you have to have the doctor write the letter corresponding to the very specific outline that the government (idk if that is who) provides and pay the fee which is like a hundred buck or more and it's only good for ten years.  I wish the government would just make it country wide that you could change your gender marker if you are transitioning (no matter how far you are into transition)

In Oregon it's pretty simple to change the driver's license gender marker. The DMV has a list of therapists they'll accept a letter from.

SSA expects surgery.

I was born in Texas, so I will at some point be able to change my birth certificate.

I don't have any of this done yet (still waiting for my name change to go through), but I just check male. Because of my name, I assume they think it's a typo half the time.

Really? I've been putting "female" and "undisclosed" all this time for no reason? Oh, my god. >_< (Except I'm in high school and my school enrollment form would tell them anyway.)

I have always responded as if it were sex and chose some unspecified option whenever offered. I always worried there would be legal issues or I wouldn't get the job otherwise. I'm not quite sure how I would even come out to my boss, as I have no idea about discrimination laws.

Where I am, unless it is a gender specific job and there are very few of them, we cannot even ask someone for their gender at a job interview or on an application.

Since your gender does not prevent you from doing the job it is irrelevant.

And that is how it should be.

A gender specific job has to approved by the Commissioner for Equal Rights. I can't recall one at the moment, I know there are some.
