I've often enjoyed the difference in semantics between English speaking countries. I watched some Aussies play a game of football in a dry Vietnamese rice paddy against a group of Kiwis, later when discussing the game with the Aussie group, I made the comment that they were a spunky team and that I had been rooting for them. One of the Aussies turned to his friends and said, "Blimey mates, I think we have a poofter here!"

I figured on "spunk." I was wondering about "root..." the double whammy probably made it pretty hilarious.

I had a similar situation when I moved to the UK from South Africa. In South Africa in the 1980s & 1990s, computers had two types of removable disks: floppy disks were the large, flexible black ones... but eventually the smaller, harder ones came out too. To differentiate between them, South Africans called the smaller ones 'stiffy disks'.

So when I moved to the UK, imagine my male colleague's surprise when I asked him whether I could use his stiffy for a bit...

Yeah, I was in the paratroops and that wasn't anything any of us would have considered, so their remark was quite an affront though I took it in good stead as I was outnumbered at the time anyway.

Where did that come from?  >.>   I don't think it was money wasted.  If I didn't renew it I would have to take the knowledge test over and that would be a waste of money. 

As for my license, I don't think I have much of a choice.  At this point, my only other option is to immediately move up north somewhere with adequate public transportation and start my life over....but that's not feasable right now.
