How to stop kids from staring at you?

Thanks everyone who commented! I won't have to deal with the kids anymore - they just moved out! But many thanks to you since I learned how to prepare myself in case

  Carbon@ It felt like I was getting bullied or something. They didn't just stare to make sense out of me. On top of the usual throwing things/ making lousy sounds at me, the older one tried to trip me over his feet-was unsuccessful of course, but it was an wakeup call that I should've done something about that then keep ignoring - once they approached me and deliberately started jumping on both sides just to get me off of the couch. Just plain rude.

Actually I found out the other day that I might be passing with little kids. In no way do I at all look enough like a guy. I think at a young enough age, they sort of accept the short haircut, guy clothes, etc.= guy. I've heard a lot about kids asking "are you a boy or a girl"? If you experience that, they just want to know. Perhaps they are just mixed up about it.

At a certain age though perhaps the little censors come out and they would be worse about it than adults who tend to look away when  they dislike/don't understand something. I'd guess it to be around age 12 or so. They can be VERY obnoxious at a certain age.

I totally understand the feeling of being sort of "reverse bullied". There were a couple kids in the middle school I teach in who were standing around making inappropriate comments. I didn't know them but I went to the trouble of finding out who they were and stopping them.
In triggered in me the feeling of being bullied as a child.

Being in a wheelchair, I've dealt with this problem my whole life. When I was young, my Mother used to snap at them, but that was just MORE embarrassing. The more respectful ones ask questions ("Are you a robot?") and I politely answer ("Yes"). Otherwise, I just ignore them. Being stared at by kids is the only thing about transitioning that will be standard fair for me! Who cares what a 10-year-old thinks anyway?

My partner and I are the only foreigners in my neighborhood, so we get stared at a lot. I look more foreign then him though, so I get eyeballed by pretty much everyone. Kids, adults, teenagers, old guys, everyone. I have had kids ask their parents a variety of questions and their parents always look mortified when they realize I understand. ("Why does that man have white hair? Why does that man have things in his face? Why does that man look so funny?") Two elementary school girls stopped me when I was walking down the street to ask me why I looked so funny and if I was really old because my hair is so light.

Kids are kids. If they are that young, I doubt they can cause any harm. Just ignore them. If they are staring at you all the time, they are just brats. Like Emma said, who cares what kids think?

a lot of it has to do with parenting and hopefully there will be more open mind people in the future. Part of why my son doesn't stare is because he was raised around all kinds of people gay, straight, drag queens, trans, ect.... but only time will tell but i have hope to the future, seeing my son and some of my friends kids give me that.
