It means that we're more tolerant of diversity over here - there's room in Europe for mermaidists and amermaidists to get along without anyone needing to prove anything either way .

Reminds me of a show called Ghostwatch in the UK about twenty years ago, made in the form of a documentary, which had people calling the BBC because they thought it was real.

We still have people here in Tasmania who refuse to accept that their ancestors wiped the Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) off the face of the earth.  They still produce blurry photos of wild dogs or similar as evidence.  Some people are desperate to believe in all sorts of things.

There are several well-known "Lazarus" species.  The most famous has to be the coelacanth.

The Chacoan peccary is another that was known only from fossils, before being re-discovered.

In the United States and Canada, the Black Footed ferret was considered extinct, due to habitat destruction.  But a remnant population was found and a breeding program instituted.

In Australia, there are several of these type of species, including the New Holland mouse and the Bridled Nailtail wallaby.

When my kid was little she used the word "mermaid" for any pretty girl. She couldn't wait to be a mermaid. She was so jealous when my little sister went to prom. She wrapped a towel around herself to make a beautiful dress so she could be a mermaid too.

To be fair, any four legged creature at the time was a "horse" and any machine was a "train" and any large room was a "barn." Definitions were a little fast and loose at the time.
