Supposedly they have it down to the first day as being a Thursday, about tea-time. Oh wait, that might have been a Monty Python thing.
I thought that was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

It could very well be. I've read 4 of the 5 books of the trilogy, and know enough to have a towel at all times.

But, Monty Python has the Ministry of Silly Walks. What can Arthur Dent do to top that?  ;)

People in this country, like in all countries, believe in dumb sh*t. The difference is, people in this country can do a whole lot more damage...

There are good books out that debunks the science BS that is spread out by the media and on the internet.  One good book is Bad Astronomy by Phil Plait.  It describes the debunking of the Apollo Moon Landing Hoax conspiracy and the other manure that is spread out before us.  Link to the homepage: http://www.badastronomy.com/index.html

I'd just like to point out to all you Amercia-haters that this study was done in the US. We know there's no mermaids. I have yet to see similar statements in Europe or Asia. What does that mean, hmm?

Personally I don't hate Americans.  I just scratch my head bemusedly sometimes.  ::)

It means that we're more tolerant of diversity over here - there's room in Europe for mermaidists and amermaidists to get along without anyone needing to prove anything either way :).

Anyway, this is all terribly binary - where are the merandrogynes? ;D

*shrugs* There are gullible people in every country, not just the US.

Reminds me of a show called Ghostwatch in the UK about twenty years ago, made in the form of a documentary, which had people calling the BBC because they thought it was real.

How a show is made can have an effect on the people watching it I guess.

We still have people here in Tasmania who refuse to accept that their ancestors wiped the Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) off the face of the earth.  They still produce blurry photos of wild dogs or similar as evidence.  Some people are desperate to believe in all sorts of things.

Well there is fine line between cryptozoology and fantasy beliefs. I'm definitely not a hater of anyone, Americans and Tasmanians included.

I hold out hope for the Thylacine.

There are several well-known "Lazarus" species.  The most famous has to be the coelacanth.

The Chacoan peccary is another that was known only from fossils, before being re-discovered.

In the United States and Canada, the Black Footed ferret was considered extinct, due to habitat destruction.  But a remnant population was found and a breeding program instituted.

In Australia, there are several of these type of species, including the New Holland mouse and the Bridled Nailtail wallaby.

Just like anywhere else, we have our share of idiots and morons here in America. Statistically, the average IQ is 100 so that means half the population has an IQ 100 or below and we are always going to have fringe wackos that get too much attention.

As everyone knows though there is "The United States of Canada" and "Jesusland". I think some of the west should not be in the "Jesusland" but what do I know.
Okay here goes (for the two people who have not seen this):

As we all know both of them are totally different places.

Dang I live in the "Jesusland" but really would like to live in  "The United States of Canada". But I do live almost at the border so does that count?

When my kid was little she used the word "mermaid" for any pretty girl. She couldn't wait to be a mermaid. She was so jealous when my little sister went to prom. She wrapped a towel around herself to make a beautiful dress so she could be a mermaid too.

To be fair, any four legged creature at the time was a "horse" and any machine was a "train" and any large room was a "barn." Definitions were a little fast and loose at the time. ;D
