" I am not like some transgender folks who always knew they wanted to be, for me it was always back and forth struggling with my secret desires vs my conservative christian upbringing and fears. "

Don't be hard on yourself. By your own words, yes, you do know. But that knowledge clashes not with something inside of you, but your external training and upbringing. Shrug that stuff off, and you'll know who you are without shame. Good luck!

Something to remind your religious mother of...

Mat 7:1 "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again"

She should base her opinion of you on your internal goodness, not your appearance.

John 7:24, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment."

I have the same deep rooted Christian upbringing, and I am not sure I will ever come to terms with it.  To call something an abomination of God is to call God a liar.  God is love. People do things that are imperfect from the ultimate ideal of people.  So what?  I think the ultimate sin against God referred to in the Bible is to cast aside a person out of hate from something they do.  Unarguably, some aspects of things happening in my brain, and Im sure everyone elses conflict with the religion of Christianity.  Forget about all that, true closeness to God is NOT in the acceptance of a church, but in the enactment of his will in our daily lives.  People may cast you aside, not even able to place themselves in your frame of mind.  However, many, many more will not.
