A friend of my dad's (who I have heard about for years but never met) was over today. She accidentally called me my old name. I suppose because my dad used to use it to describe me to her for many years. Anyway, the first time she did it she said "oops! OK, if I do it again I owe you ten dollars." I laughed cause I assumed she was messing. Then she accidentally used the old name and pronouns again. And she said "S*!" and ran for her purse...she pulled out $20 and put it in my hand. I was insistent on not taking it but she didn't take no for an answer, saying that she "needed to learn." I have to say, that was really kind of her. She did it a third time and was about to pull out more, and I said "No, you said ten but gave me twenty, so we're even."
We should institute a "wrong name jar" in my family. Anyone who uses the wrong name puts in $10. I'll retire at 25.
