My first doctor experience was interesting. I went to an endocrinologist. She was a nice little Indian lady. At first, I don't think she knew what to think of me. I presented as a male to her and explained all that I had been feeling and what I had done thus far and that both I and my psychiatrist thought it was time to proceed. I wanted to have tests done to see if anything was physically wrong with me that would explain why I felt this way. She ordered blood test, but was very reluctant. After this first visit, I remember being somewhat discouraged, but happy to have an order for a blood test.

My second visit revealed that I had 5alpha and she insisted upon giving me DHT. She said all I needed was to feel like a man and that these feelings I was having would go away. I was like hell no basically. Eventually, she said, I want you to go talk to your psychiatrist again and make sure that HRT is what you want. She began to get nicer at this point. She said things like, "I am only here to help you, I want whats best for you and what you truly want." She also gave me some advice on dealing with my family.

The third visit I went as a female. She was like, "you should have told me you were doing this all along!" She wrote me a script for HRT and that was that. I'll have my fourth visit in a month to see whats going on. Other than that, I actually really like my doctor now. She is a nice person and I feel like she does actually care about me!

My first visit to a doctor in regards to pursuing hormone replacement therapy was through a therapist who looked alright from their website. Got to the address I was directed to, and it turns out that her office was at the back of her house in the basement. Okay, so I had two sessions with this therapist, at the second one she decided to talk about the need for facial feminization surgery and breast augmentation. Now, I understand both are a reality that I had to accept and I had already done that. I stated as much to her, and also explained that I didn't feel comfortable having insecurities about my body image reinforced on the second appointment. I had just met her a week prior and as such I was totally uncertain of why she was pressing that onto me. I spoke to her further and she told me that I would have to live as a woman for two years before she'd write a letter of recommendation so I could get HRT from an endo. I stopped seeing her at that point.

I felt pretty dismayed by the whole experience, but I managed to find a better therapist who didn't shove gatekeeping nonsense down my throat, and I saw her for a year or so. At our first appointment together though, she pointed out that I could start HRT without any sort of letter from her by going to a clinic which offered informed consent. I set up an appointment and had my blood drawn for tests on the first visit. From there my blood work came back clear, so the next step was to talk to one of the clinic's therapists to make sure I was capable of providing informed consent. That went great and so on the third visit my doctor went over a few things with me and I was prescribed the HRT meds that I am presently on, and I'm feeling great about it all.

Mine eyed me and gave me my script and sent me on my way. I guess she knew I was pretty much there for one thing. Got my bloodwork done 3 months later.
