QuoteA row has broken out after the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland was named Bigot of the Year by gay rights charity Stonewall.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien's stance on gay marriage was singled out at Stonewall's annual awards in London.

Sponsors Barclays and Coutts have said they will axe their funding if the category is not dropped next year.

Until a few weeks ago, this organisation was encouraging it's supporters to call any who supported marriage equality Nazis!

Considering the history of the man who leads his cult it's typical.
"Don't ask me, it was on fire when I lay down on it"

Agreed. But the complication here is the relative positions between the two main churches in Scotland, the RCs and the Presbyterian. The latter has the traditional recognition, still the established church and carrying quite extraordinary powers, left over from the Union of 1707. The RCs play the eternal victims.

Stonewall, sadly, is a very London based, English organisation with a long history of self righteousness. Their stance toward the leader of Scottish RCs may seem funny, but in Scotland it will be taken, by some at least, in the same way that many Americans might have reacted to Bush Jr being called an immature liar on the 14 September 2001 by France!

The effect for gay people in Scotland might not be as postive or as encouraging as Stonewall might wish. But being London based, they know everything. If you get the idea? Hence the support for the Cardinal by one of Scotland's most prominent gay politicians.
