Agreed. But the complication here is the relative positions between the two main churches in Scotland, the RCs and the Presbyterian. The latter has the traditional recognition, still the established church and carrying quite extraordinary powers, left over from the Union of 1707. The RCs play the eternal victims.
Stonewall, sadly, is a very London based, English organisation with a long history of self righteousness. Their stance toward the leader of Scottish RCs may seem funny, but in Scotland it will be taken, by some at least, in the same way that many Americans might have reacted to Bush Jr being called an immature liar on the 14 September 2001 by France!
The effect for gay people in Scotland might not be as postive or as encouraging as Stonewall might wish. But being London based, they know everything. If you get the idea? Hence the support for the Cardinal by one of Scotland's most prominent gay politicians.
