Ok, so I'm going to start using the lady's room soon...and I have some anxiety about sounds, either "#1" or "#2"...

It's widely believed that women don't toot, and in a bathroom (at least in the guy's) one can encounter some awful sounds and smells--HEY CAN YOU DO A COURTESY FLUSH?! JEEZ DUDE!--and I am worried about making improper noises...

Yeah it's a stupid concern, and I'm sorry...any answers/insight is appreciated. Thx!
...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

Beth, I will say that your anxiety is not unfounded....I think All women think this way and worry about what sounds may come out in the ladies room.  Growing up, I was always taught that ladies don't make those sounds....although I am from the south and was brought up in a very 'ladylike' atmosphere.  In the ladies room the only way I can describe this, #1 don't worry about any 'tinkling' noises :) there's no way to really help that peeing. But as for the second number....i'd never do that in public to be perfectly honest, and I would say more often than not if you have a 'slip' in the bathroom when someone else is in a stall...well don't think about it too much. It does happen, but probably not as frequently by far than in the mens room.  I think men in general just don't get embarassed about bodily functions as women do.  Women tend to try to be more discreet especially in public. Good luck!

If you have to make sounds...timing is the key word...flushing at the exact time you blow your tooter

So, i guess what Mom used to said is true: "In life timing is everything"  >:-)

I think it depends on where you are in the world. I've heard women make some pretty nasty noises in the bathroom - and some even talk on the phone while they do their business!

Granted, I only use public bathrooms in case of extreme emergency (I don't pass well enough to go to the men's room, but am masculine-looking enough that I get dirty looks if I get 'caught' in the women's room).

But if you're that worried about it, don't be. It's the bathroom. Throw a square or two of toilet paper into the bowl if you're going to go #2. Can't do much about the noises that come with doing a #1, but it's normal.

You'll be fine.

"Battle->-bleeped-<-s" notwithstanding, I did not encounter much in the way of embarrassing noises and so forth in my experiences in women's restrooms in all sorts of venues. I suspect that (as someone has already stated), women are more self-conscious about such things and tend to wait until everyone has left, unless they have the option of doing their business in a single-occupancy stall or at home.

In the men's room, I have noticed a broader variety of attitudes that seem to be largely class-based.

LOL at the Harold and Kumar reference. I try to veer towards gender-neutral bathrooms, though I don't have too much trouble going in either one (did lead to a hilarious incident the other day because my school converted a couple of bathrooms but left urinals in there, and between me and the urinals one poor girl was extremely confused). But I digress. Women do tend to be a bit more self-conscious, but hey- if it happens, it happens! No one is going to murder you for making "unladylike" noises.

On a somewhat related note, I like that we're having some more posters from the other side of the fence on the FtM section lately. When I first joined not too long ago, I had this weird notion of it being taboo for that to happen  :P

So true. Before anyone asks, "How would you know that?," let me tell you that I volunteer in the school science department with two girls. One of them went to the bathroom, and the other said, "That's so funny! Guess what ___ texted me from the bathroom?" WHAT THE FLIM FLAM?  ???

Don't I know it. When my sister lived with me, I would hear her in there for miles.

It depends where you are. You basically never have to worry about pissing sounds, since that's basically unavoidable.

I'd never take a dump though in a restroom with people I know could be there though. Like at school, I'd only go really early or late in the day if no one is going to be around, or if it's a bathroom where no one ever goes in. It's perfectly acceptable in busy places like a train station though.

On a related bathroom note, I noticed some comments in other threads where ftms say things like "then i'd have to sit on the toliet seat" or something like that. I would never sit on a toliet seat, at least in public.

having used the women's bathrooms for almost 4 years now I can assure you that women fart and their poops smell too. I've heard them grunt, do loud farts and everything else in between.

And having used the men's bathroom for 30 some years before switching to the women's bathroom, I can say that the women's bathroom is always much dirtier. I lost count how many times I have opened the stall door and found piss all over the toilet seat.

The only advice I have is, don't pee standing up.

I remember as a child my mom teaching me to lift up a cheek when passing gas in Church while sitting on the wooden pew. That way it didn't make a buuuurrrrraaap noise but sounds more like the air breaks on a big rig psssssss, lol. I would assume if you are fart shy in the public bathroom that the same technique could be applied for almost noiseless flatulence.

In the bathrooms I've been in I think people just wait to let it all out, lol. But if you did let one go and people heard it, no one would really think anything. At the very worst, someone extremely stuck up would think it was gross and keep it to themselves, but more than likely people would just ignore it and try to finish their own business.

I admit i was self conscious the first 30 times i used the ladies room but developed a sense of belonging and ownership the 300 times to follow. As women we talk to each other pass water pass gas and do other unmentionable smelly and noisy things on a REGULAR basis if we are healthy often several times a day. We just dont talk ABOUT it in a professional setting. The biggest faux pas isnt having a thunderbutt. Its not washing your hands- we women find that utterly disgusting and rude- and only slightly less offensive is being one of those uptight women who is stuck up and wont talk to you or pretends like their bowel movement are silent odorless ballets. Though even then they may just think youve got OCD or constipation or a strange upbringing. Real women poo, wipe front to back, flush, adjust their clothes, wash their hands, fix their makeup, and if a friend is there, talk the whole time. Drink a lot of water and eat plenty of canned chili and you will have lots of practice.

Being a recent frequenter of both facilities before FT female.

Men's toilet's are far dirtier (IMO) woman do try to restrain themselves and go for #2 when they think the facilities will be freer.  Everyone stinks, everyone farts, we are human. The male GI tract tends to be larger and the food consumption by men tends to be larger so the dumps are larger. The physiology is the same.

Everyone gets embarrassed.  Which makes you think why?

As some one once said : "->-bleeped-<- happens"

And no don't censor it.
