I cooked chicken couscous with cashews, chickpeas, peas, red pepper and goats cheese.

Third time this week.  I am loving it for some reason.

Good choice, the only brand that isn't loaded with high fructose!

Ummm, errr, fructose - good.

high fructose corn syrup - bad.

Being part of the term HFCS gives fructose an undeserved black eye.  It is a "good" sugar in that it requires processing by the liver before it can be used by the body, hence does not give a sugar rush like glucose, which can be immediately used as fuel.

HFCS has everything in the world to do with the rampant obesity and diabetes problem here in the US. It is routinely added to everything so that average sugar consumption is up 28% since the 1980's. One hundred and fifty-six pounds. That's how much added sugar Americans consume each year on a per capita basis, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Imagine it: 31 five-pound bags for each of us. "America: Drowning in Sugar" - CSPInet.org Members here at Susan's wonder how they can shape up and lose unwanted weight, first step is to cut out sugar intake as much as possible, that means reading labels for content before buying and an aggressive exercise regimen. I weighed 230 at 5' 7" and finally woke up, I am at 170 and looking at 165 as my target weight. No diabetes or heart failure for this kid, anyone who wants to be healthy, look good in their clothes and have a believable MtF transition needs to consider these things.

I agree with you Shan.  I just want to pick out some subtle but important distinctions here.

From Wikipedia:

"The most widely used varieties of HFCS are: HFCS 55 (mostly used in soft drinks), approximately 55% fructose and 42% glucose; and HFCS 42 (used in beverages, processed foods, cereals, and baked goods), approximately 42% fructose and 53% glucose"

It is the glucose content in HFCS that makes it a bad thing in large quantities.  "Fructose" is used in the name HFCS as a way to enhance or glamorize the sound, kind of like calling garbage collectors "sanitation engineers".  Unfortunately, borrowing words in that manner also cheapens the word in its' original meaning.

The significant difference between HFCS and fructose in the general sense is that HFCS is a refined product, while fructose is found in whole fruits.  It is true that sugars in general should be consumed sparingly.  Refined sugars are the most egregious type because of the glucose content, which is either used by the body or stored immediately, without further processing by the liver.  Having a sudden glut of glucose nearly insures that it will go directly to fat.

Got that, and I used the term high fructose in my original post referring to HFCS. I do enjoy an apple and a banana every morning with it's natural sugars, but make a point of reading a lot of labels while at the grocery store to limit the HFCS intake in an effort to keep my overall sugar intake to a dull roar. We bought the halloween candies, I put them in a big bowl up on the top shelf so we aren't tempted to grab a few every day and wind up wearing the results.

I needed to use up some greens in the refrigerator, and some lunch meat, so I made a quick chef's salad.  Boiled a couple of eggs too.

Small salad and a protein shake. Hey, a girl has to look good! Far better than what I ate at the firehouse in a different life. :)

Yes! I hear that :) Salad and protein is the core tenet of my weight loss program. Are you vegetarian or is the shake just an easier source of protein (I use meat... I'm eating less of it, but I won't stop). I also use a whole head of romaine lettuce ~ lunch and dinner... fills me up!

Not a vegetarian, love meat too much! What I am doing is working though. Being a retired paramedic I know the human body and have lost thirty eight pounds since July 15th. Mornings I have a small salad or fruit cup and a GNC Vita-Pac (energy/metabolism) At lunch a large salad and one fruit and at Dinner a medium salad and six ounces of lean beef or chicken breast. Protein shakes are at AM/Noon/Dinner. I don't get hungry and don't feel bloated. I feel great! Treated myself to a new black dress at last weigh in! :)

Congrats! I think I've said before, but I have cereal (Kashi GoLean) and a yogurt, then two salads. There are always exceptions... but I try to make them healthy ones! 204.0 this morning, from a 235 start!

Holy guacamole!  That's nearly five pounds per week.
