Trying to find hormone specialist...

I came out to my family a couple months ago and this past month I've told my psychiatrist who pointed me to my general practice doctor who in turn knew nothing on where to look or where I would go. I'm in the Watertown NY area and she seemed to think I would have to go to Syracuse NY to find a specialist, but beyond that I don't know where to go or who to call.  Do any of you know of any resources I could find in Syracuse or somewhere close that could get me started on my path? No one else seems to know how to help me...

Hi, not sure if you meant that you tried the local options and had no luck, or that you don't know how to find a doctor. I searched "Enocrinologist Watertown N.Y." and found an endo right in Watertown. You could call and ask if they accept transgender clients for HRT. Hope this helps, hugs, Devlyn

I meant to say I don't know how to find the right doctor.  So an Endocrinologist is the first step in the 6 month+ journey to hormones or does it start elsewhere?  I see a psychiatrist as well, but they can only help with the psychological depression.

In a context where you're really free in a private system, like in the US, things can vary a lot. I'd suggest calling around endocrinologists' offices and ask whether they deal with trans things. If they do, jackpot. Either they'll see you right away, either they'll tell you who to see for preliminary psychological evaluations. They should at least know who their patients' referrals are coming from.

I searched online. Syracuse University has a GLBT Resource Center. (http://lgbt.syr.edu/) I would contact them, regardless of your age, about transgender friendly providers in the area. It is very likely they have very comprehensive list, including endocrinologists. You should not have a problem going to Syracuse. Best wishes on your journey!
