Hey everyone,

I've been hovering around these forums for a while but never posted. I just came out to friends as trans and I have an appointment with a doctor to talk about HRT on Monday. Wow.

I used to pass okay when I was younger, but now I'm older and it's hard. I wanted to see what you guys thought about my ->-bleeped-<-ty webcam pictures. I'm small and don't have the deepest voice so I feel like I'm doomed.

I don't know what you sound like, but I think you could probably pass but to me, it's the hairstyle that throws me off.  I feel like if your hair were shorter at the sides it would make a difference.

Okay so It's been a while since I first posted on here. So I'm pre-t and binding now. My voice is deep enough that if I talk in a low tone you wouldn't think I am female.  I'm going to start testosterone in August.
Let me know. Do I pass?  No sugarcoating plz :)

I need to get me some full body shorts.
This is the only I have and It's been a while since I took it.

Caleb: You pass in my eyes but you look maybe 14-16, if that matters. I'm a high school teacher so I'm pretty comfortable judging teenagers' ages. c:

Leroy: I read you as a 12-14 year old boy from that picture. So yeah, you'd pass to me.

Whynaut and FlightyBrood, no offense guys, but I think you could both pass better with different hair cuts/styling. I think maybe if your overall style was maybe a little punkier or something, your hairstyle might read differently in that context though, Flighty.

Be weird. Be random. Be who you are. Because you never know who would love the person you hide.

Thanks. I'm not entirely sure what to do with it. I don't know if I should go for the shaggy curl look or just trim the sides up. I'm not interested in shaving it because I'm just not into that hairstyle on myself, though I know it can be masculine.

Here's more what my hair normally does, but I thought this style was more feminine than being parted on the side and brushed across.

Taken with my phone which unfortunately makes everything look purple. My hair is actually red/auburn and the plastic frame glasses are black.

[edit]

Also bonus recording of my voice. [edit]
Does anyone else notice their voice sounds higher through media? My phone voice sounds like a 12 year old girl.

I think you should decide on a men's cut before you go to the salon (and bring a picture), or just be straight up honest with the stylist and tell her you want a men's cut and for her to give you the most masculine cut that would fit your face.

Declan.

Pre-testosterone, I was never misgendered when I had long hair. The day I cut it short, most people thought I was a female, so I buzzed it, and that made the situation even worse. I don't recommend short hair anymore unless you look especially masculine; I think it adds too much to the "butch lesbian" look a lot of us have when we're still early into treatments (and a bit longer for some people).

Yeah, you look about 15 or 16 but you pass for sure. You look nice.

I noticed that too. I don't think I could have pulled off extra long hair, but when my hair was too short, I did look a lot more feminine. I never passed period, but the people who knew me as trans remembered to call me "he" a lot more when my hair was a bit longer. When I buzzed it, no one ever got it right even though they were really trying.

Not my thread so I hope you don't mind me adding my observations, but as you know a lot of men these days do wear their hair longer than do some real angular faced alpha males and it works for them and frankly they look better than if they are wearing a crew cut. Let me suggest that many FtM's have not gone through 30 - 40 years of masculinizing and their features are often a lot softer and more youthful appearing than a cis male contemporary and so it does work much better to wear your hair longer like so many cis males with softer features do. Just my opinion, hope I don't step on anyone's toes.

Hey guys! Thought I'd give this ago. I'm 99.999% sure I don't pass in the slightest, but I think everyone in this thread seem to be aware of subtle things that stop you from being able to pass. Anyway, I know I've got long hair, but since they're dreadlocks, I don't think that's what people think makes me a girl, and I don't think a short haircut would make me look like a guy at all. I think it's just make me look like a girl with short hair. But yeah, so...thoughts?

Short hair cut definitely will probably help.
