"According to several demographic studies, between 70-90 percent of China's gay men are currently married - or will marry - a straight women, compared to 15-20 percent in the US. China's tongqi could then number as many as 25 million across the country, according to Liu Dalin, a pioneering sexologist now retired from the University of Shanghai."
There are many reasons why gay men marry women in China, but one reason is that men feel the need to pass on the family name and give their parents a grandchild. Even though gay communities are thriving in cities like Beijing and Shanghai, being gay is still taboo in more rural areas. LGBT rights groups have been pushing for same-sex marriage since 2003, but so far have been unsuccessful. This marriage arrangment has become so common, that a new word has been made to describe it
tongquis. Since the suicide of a woman married to a gay man last year,
tongquis have come to the public eye, and some women in these relationships have started blogging about their relationships.
