Republican Wants Right to Fire LGBT Employees Who 'Work in a Tutu'

"Some Republicans claim they haven't thought about the merits of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would make it illegal to fire someone for being gay. But that doesn't include one Idaho state lawmaker.

"I'd hire a gay guy if I thought he was a good worker. But if he comes into work in a tutu ... he's not producing what I want in my office," said Cornel Rasor, according to The Spokesman-Review of Spokane, Wash. Rasor is the chairman of the Idaho GOP's resolutions committee, which wants the state to invalidate any local antidiscrimination ordinances that include protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation  in housing and other areas."

What if a transgender woman shows up wearing professional female clothes?  I think the "no tutus" rule should also apply to cis-women in an office (probably as part of the dress code)

I didn't go all the way to DC to fight for an inclusive ENDA for this chap to stop it passing. I'll keep fighting and my resolve is stronger than his. Luckily, One of our Indiana Representatives ( Senator Joe Donnelly) is a sponsor of the new ENDA bill. So Lobbying him was more of a, "Thank you and please, keep pressing for this." kind of meeting, Congressman Todd Young I am hoping, will vote yes. He's a really great guy and he listened to what we had to say. It was hard to read him, he's playing close to his chest. But, we will see.

Why does it seem that quite a lot of the time anytime a Republican politician wants a right it's usually to remove someone else's right or civil liberty?

Besides which aren't there any more important issues to deal with like the economy, job creation or dealing with the national debt?

I'm just curious, that's all.

At the risk of wandering off topic, I'll try to satisfy your curiosity.

Suppose you were very very very rich and wanted to control an otherwise well-intentioned political party to further your interests. You want your taxes lower, you want less regulation for the industries that you invest in, etc.

You can't very well tell people "Hey, vote for our party so we can get even richer than we already are". Nobody would go for that.

However you can say, "Hey look at those people! They're different from you. They're out to destroy your lifestyle. Vote for our party and we'll protect you from those people." You have a good chance of scaring enough people to win an election or two.

Note, this is not a commentary on the Republican party or conservative ideals (many of which I agree with), merely the tactics they've used lately and the reason why they've had to resort to those tactics.

I've heard the "what if they come to work in a tutu" argument before...all the Republicans are doing is using a negative stereotype to demean the LGBT community...which is apparently fine for their voter base.

While this is true, the Democrats have done the same thing...for example, characterizing the NRA as "wanting to arm drug dealers" and "wanting to see massacres on school grounds", and claiming "the Rich" want to see people starve.

Summed up, we hear: LOOK! LOOK AT THEM PEOPLES! THEY'RE...*WEIRD*, AND *DIFFERENT*!! THEY'RE A THREAT TO YOU, TO US, TO OUR WAY OF LIFE!!

Unfortunately, most people are relatively brain-dead, and "think" with their emotions. Want to win an election? Pander to fear. People aren't rational. (This includes myself, btw...although I like to think otherwise, just like everyone else...MOOooooOOOoooo....)

I really don't know what to do with my right to vote...when I'm given the choice of Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum...and if I were to run (and win), I'd still have to work with not only those two, but The Mad Hatter and The Red Queen as well.

Beth, have you ever built a house 'cause you sure hit the nail on the head. I don't trust any of them to tell the truth. And yeah, that's exactly what I hear when they talk.

This is ridiculous.  Extending protections to LGBT Employees doesn't mean that you are allowing chaos into one's business.  The law is meant to protect people from being fired because of their gender or sexual orientation.  They can still be fired for other reasons like other employees.  Let's make it simple.  If you get fired because your gay, the law will protect you.  If you get fired because you ignore the companies dress code by coming into work wearing a tutu and a swastika t-shirt, then the law will not protect you even if you are LGBT.   The motive for the firing is what is relevant.  Is this really that hard to grasp?
