At the risk of wandering off topic, I'll try to satisfy your curiosity.
Suppose you were very very very rich and wanted to control an otherwise well-intentioned political party to further your interests. You want your taxes lower, you want less regulation for the industries that you invest in, etc.
You can't very well tell people "Hey, vote for our party so we can get even richer than we already are". Nobody would go for that.
However you can say, "Hey look at those people! They're different from you. They're out to destroy your lifestyle. Vote for our party and we'll protect you from those people." You have a good chance of scaring enough people to win an election or two.
Note, this is not a commentary on the Republican party or conservative ideals (many of which I agree with), merely the tactics they've used lately and the reason why they've had to resort to those tactics.
